i like parts of their more soul-based material but i prefer the experimentalism of that 2nd disc by far. but i dont know what else of theirs to get as there seems so much/its too hard to find. what should i look for?

good luck finding it now, but get the Parallel Universe LP...also, be on the hunt for any Reinforced label compilation...(Jungle Book is probably the best)...and the Tek 9 Lp peversely entitled It's Not What You Think It Is?! is really great, mostly on the experimental tip, and has nice bonus disc of earlier rave/jungle classics...barring all of that, there are some nice things on the 4 Hero Remix album, which is widely available...

I used to have that techno album of theirs (was it called Jacob's Stairway something?), but that one was actually boring as hell. Parallel Universe is great, but much smoother than the second disc of Two Pages. If you like that sort of d'n'b experimentalism, you might enjoy the stuff T Power did in the nineties.

Jacob's Optical Stairway...I always forget about that one...I mostly liked it, but don't return to it very often...

if you like two pages, you might also like REAL JUNGLE.

haha sorry, sorry

shabba ranks (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, my advice is to hunt down all the early 4hero and manix and tom and jerry eps off of slsk. they're out there.

parallel universe is GREAT if you program out "universal love"

i think i had PU a while back but found it almost like drum n bass mixed with environmental music. like what they would play if jungle clubs had a massage/aromatherapy relaxation room.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jacob's Optical Stairway indeed...not boring at all (actually my favorite album by them, love how it all goes vertical towards the end.)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

And you just have to find 'The Paranormal In 4 Form' (it's on Macro Dub Infection Vol.1). Ah yes, the 90s.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

you don't deserve to listen to 4 hero

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

haha...sorry (no need to pull my "I saw them dj with A Guy Called Gerald when you were..." spiel then. ;)

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

i was talking to mr "JoS = boring, try t powah"

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

jacob's optical stairway probably was the best thing they did, in that not only is it as good as the rest of the stuff they did, but it's probably the only thing they did that doesn't really sound like a version of something somebody else was doing at the time.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

parallel universe = black secret technology
tom + jerry = dj monk, dj stretch, noodles + wonder, etc
manix = doc scott, goldie
tek 9 = nookie, lemon d, l double
2nd disc of "two pages" = arcon 2, sonar circle, etc

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, to get back to the original question: crucial experimental junglism circa 1999

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

I've sold my copy of Jacob's Optical Stairway years ago, but from what I remember it sounded kinda like a sterile pastiche of Detroit techno with some breakbeats. Might have a different opinion if I heard it today, who knows. Anyway, I wasn't comparing it to T Power, just saying that T Power might be closer to the sound Tityschneider was looking for.

Anyway, I think no one can claim the first disc of Two Pages sounds like a version of something was doing at the same time; it doesn't even sound like the cosmic fusion jazz it was inspired by. The most you could claim is that it was jazzstep (with its tendency to fall back to "real" instruments) taken to the extreme, where it stops being dull coffee shop music and becomes something else (romantic Afrofuturism?). But then again, someone might claim that it is exactly dull coffee shop music, and I might be the only one in ILM who really loves that disc to death.

i actually agree w/ this statement, for the most part.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

What I really like about the first disc is that isn't really fusion jazz nor classical music. Mark and Dego aren't skilled enough composers to make a proper classical or fusion piece, so they rely on the dynamics of electronic music instead, which makes it rather unique. I didn't like the album that followed Two Pages (Patterns?) exactly because it was more about "proper" songs.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

it's sort of an oversimplification, because it ignores what ashley beedle, nuyorican soul, nightmares on wax, kirk degiorgio etc were up to ... i mean, it's not like it came out of nowhere (hi dere straight no chaser) but it did take things one step further

jacobs optical stairway, ok lots of people were talking about detroit techno + jungle beats but i don't think anybody expected it would turn out quite like THAT. you look at a track like "20 degrees of taurus" or "the naphosisous" wars ... it's so SLOW, so CLEAN, so SHINY ... it sounds like a UFO or something ... you have to stop and ask "what makes this jungle? what makes this detroit techno?"

it basically sounds like music from the future, which is what it was, because they basically invented broken beat here, right?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...

i cant afford all those diff things hunta mentioned above although i will try to get them in time. listened to this two pages 2nd cd again today though and its still really genius although for some reason i find it a bit difficult to listen to too often.

If I remember correctly, Technical Itch also used to do similar sort of stuff (though a bit more techsteppy) around that time, but it's been years so memories are kinda dim. You might wanna track down their (his?) stuff, still.
