4 Hours Of THE FALL @ Danny's In Chicago 10/17 10pm

I'm going to DJ 4 hours of The Fall tonight. I told the person who booked it that the bar would be "packed". Uh-oh.

Question is, what do I start with? What do I end with?

derekerdman (Derek Erdmany), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

Start with "Totally Wired," end with the lo-fi live version of "Jawbone and the Air Rifle" from Hip Priests and Kamerads to get all the drunks out of the place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Play "Wings" for 4 hours.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have a sampler loaded with MES between song banter. I hope there's a place to plug it in.

Have a stab at how many people will come, I'll let you know later.

derekerdman (Derek Erdmany), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

Despite wishing you all the best for this brave endeavour, I'll hazard a guess and say 12.

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

I did this with a mate at the Rhiz in Vienna a couple of years back. Non-stop Fall from 9pm - 2am.

I can't even remember what we started and finished with but about 20 or so Fall fans turned up (on top of the usual Rhiz crowd)... It was great to be able to fulfill every request we were asked!

Good luck-ah.

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh God I remember doing a few 4 hour Fall shows myself! Godspeed. Don't forget Cruiser's Creek.

Bassment Jacks (Bimble...), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

If the owners get worried about too many women in the bar, play "And This Day" x2.

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

start with "Bombast"
MES got this nice spoken word thing at the begining of the song
or with "Lay of the land" - nice intro

emekars (emekars), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

chronological order.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

So, how did this go?!

Cracks (Crackity), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hope he finished with "Bill Is Dead". There are days I think all DJ sets should end with "Bill Is Dead".

deekew (deekew), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

get out much?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

I started with Rowche Rumble (actually I started with the "from the riot torn streets..." intro on A Part Of America Therein). I think it was during Spectre Vs. Rector (8-9 songs in) that 2 big groups of people that had been there before I started got up and left. Danny's is a sort of popular bar and there was a decent crowd before I got there.

I'd say with the comings and goings there was 80 people there at all times. Maybe 50% Fall related? I dunno.

Some guy came up to me during Stephen Song and asked if I had any trip hop. I said that I was just playing The Fall and he asked if they had any trip hop songs. I replied "sorta".

Tracklist went something like (not in order, I stuck mostly with chronological when I could):

Rowche Rumble
Fiery Jack
2nd Dark Age
Mess Of My
Psycho-Mafia
Rebellious Jukebox
Mother Sister
Futures & Pasts
Muzorewi's Daughter
Spectre Vs. Rector
Flat Of Angles
How I Wrote Elastic Man
Putta Block
Ludd Gang
Wings
Joker Hysterical Face
Marquis Cha Cha
Room To Live
Pay Your Rates
Middle Mass
Leave The Capitol
Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul
Fantastic Life
Look, Know
I'm Into CB
English Scheme
In The Park
Container Drivers
The Classical
Jawbone & The Air Rifle
Who Makes The Nazis?
Hotel Bloedel
Garden
Tempo House
I Feel Voxish
Oh Brother
Slang King
Stephen Song
No Bulbs
US 80s-90s
Shoulder Pads
ROD!
Cruiser's Creek
Cab It Up
CREEP
Athlete Cured
Kurious Oranj
Chicago Now
Lady Bird
A Lot Of Wind
Hip Priest

As you can see it was pretty early years-heavy. They didn't have CD players, I'd have played Words Of Expectation as it's my favorite.

The bartenders seemed really happy at the end of the night, noting that it was "800% better than a recent Smiths Night" that they had. Both said they hadn't heard much of The Fall beforehand but said they liked it A LOT. I drank a bunch of beer and was pretty "boozy" by the end of the night. After Hip Priest (what I played as a closer) one bartender told me to play another song. I grabbed the first thing I saw which was 15 Ways. Some lady told me it was the worst song the Fall every did and then claimed to have dated Ben Pritchard.

I had a whole lot of fun.

derekerdman (Derek Erdmany), Thursday, 19 October 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

Woah,, I missed it, and nice intro from their gig @ Tuts.

factcheckr (factcheckr), Thursday, 19 October 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

not lately

deekew (deekew), Thursday, 19 October 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

Spectre vs. Rector! Now that's brave. I don't even think I would have touched that one.

Bassment Jacks (Bimble...), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

That's not very noize of you, bimble.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

15 Ways is the worst, agreed.

Hey Derek, are you having any more art-selling parties this fall? I just moved into a new place and want another piece of yours to complement the giant tooth above my mantle.

jaymc, Monday, 29 October 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

There was a Six Hours Of Fall thing at a gay club in Seattle this past summer. Fall DJ Night fever is catching I guess.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

It was 7 hours, excuse me. And it was in early October. Oops.

jaymc: I probably will at the beginning of December. You're welcome to come over and look at what's on hand anytime you'd like.

Mackro Mackro: That was me in Seattle as well. I'm trying to get together a 24 hour marathon with different DJs in early January 2008. It should be "fun".

A Derek Erdman, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Cool, maybe I'll e-mail you.

jaymc, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'm totally disappointed that I missed this thing in Seattle. You should post this stuff BEFORE it happens rather than after!

Bimble, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

In fact, if there are any Fall fans in Seattle, please email me or something. I know one other guy here who would have enjoyed this but that's about it.

Bimble, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

You didn't play backdrop? Pah, its a good job I didn't nip over to Chicago for this - I was tempted, but the transport from here is awkward - If I'd sat through that for four hours waiting for backdrop and then you didn't play it I'd be crying all the way home.

Actually its a nice selection, you didn't go cheesey which is the way I'd have done it - not that anybody will ever let me play 4 hours of the fall to the public. I'd have played Hit the North followed by Edinburgh Man, then all the covers and put repetition on twice in a row.

Sandy Blair, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

Bimble, the 7 Hours Of Fall thing was posted in the Stranger and on Lineout. Sure, a post here would have helped too, but it's not as if this wasn't promoted at all either. (I was working overtime that night :( , otherwise I would have been there.)

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

i find it very hard to believe that there arent any Fall fans in seattle

deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

if i've heard of them they are not obscure enough to go beneath the radar of an entire metro area

deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Deej, there wouldn't have been a 7 Hours Of The Fall thing here if there weren't Fall fans, lol. I'm not sure how that night went, but the Fall have played to packed houses here in recent years. Also, KEXP has been playing the hell out of the latest album, so the non-Fall oriented KEXP worshippers are now in the game too.

In brief, you are correct sir.

Well, fair enough, I've just never grown accustomed to this idea that the Stranger is supposed to be consumed online rather than in paper form. Was there really an ad in the Stranger hardcopy too? I'm sorry you didn't get to go either! We both missed out, I guess.

I'm sure there are plenty of Fall fans in Seattle. The question is how do I find them? ;) The last time the Fall played here was quite awhile ago, at least as far back as 2002. They cancelled their date here on the last tour.

You should do this in Los Angeles, not many people here seem to appreciate The Fall.

lol, marc riley from in a hole. Probably the best Fall pic ever.

Mark E. tells a hilarious story about this photo in his biography.
