a week or so ago, i made a request on this internet radio station i listen to at work. i REQUESTED a cocteau twins -- what i GOT, on the other hand, was this odd italian song with some old italian guy singing "SHOESHINA SHOESHINA" accompanied by piano, acoustic guitar, and a KAZOO. at first, we thought that it was just some kind of weird joke -- like some italian spike jones, or something that you'd hear on an italian benny hill's song (if an italian benny hill actually EXISTS). but the music was actually pretty GOOD (if a bit odd to my american ears), a neat little italian cabaret/vaudeville-type song. just yesterday, after being pestered about it, the station's owner played this odd little song again. another listener then ID'd the singer and the song -- "lo zio" by paolo conte. i did a quick check on this paolo conte fellow on wikipedia and allmusic.com -- apparently, he's an italian jazz/cabaret singer who's been around for a while over there (since the early 60s) and is described as a cross of jacques brel and tom waits. (never got an explanation as to how this got confused with the cocteau twins, for what it's worth -- only connection i can think of is that elisabeth fraser might as well be singing in italian for what i can make out of what she's singing on some old CT songs, but i digress).

anyway, i am sorely tempted to plunk down some cash on a Paolo Conte best-of (for sale on amazon!) but before i do so, any more info on this intriguing fellow would be much appreciated!

perhaps momus may know something about this guy (mr. conte also was compared to serge gainsbourg, though i gather that he's a bit less randy than mr. gainsbourg) -- seems like it may be right up his alley?!?

Sounds like I can help here.. I'm italian, as Mr. Conte is :)
He's one of Italy's most famous and appreciated singer/songwriter, witty enough to get the comparison with gainsbourg.
I'm not sure wether Momus knows him, I don't remember him ever quoting Conte on his site or blog. Anyway, here's a nice site (both italian and english) where you can get more informations : http://www.swonderful.net

If I were to suggest a purchase, it would be "Paris, Milonga" (RCA, 1981).

Good listenings!

i feel like we've had a thread about paolo already, but i can't find it in the search. anyway, yes, good stuff: he's been around forever but for the past 10 years or so especially he's been popping up here and there in american pop culture (does the upcoming movie happy feet use his similarly titled song? i haven't seen the trailer). there's a great great great best-of from the '90s floating around that i think was the major catalyst for all the stateside paolo-wuv.

I've got a couple of his albums--pretty good stuff. I think they were trying to market him as an Italian Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen.

Market him to Americans I mean.

Another vote of agreement. The Nonesuch best of is well worth getting. His song "Come Di" was used in a Coke commmercial a while back...you might have seen it at the movies. It was about time travel.
