musicians that were athletes

I'm trying to come up with a list of musicians who used to play sports at a reasonably high level; I'd bet there aren't many, but I'm especially curious about ones who were good enough to play some sport in College. I know Master P played basketball at Houston and then for a few NBA teams but I can't think of any others...

A sports figure who dabbles in music, like Shaq, isn't really what I'm looking for, but rather the other way around.

any ideas?

The one from Westlife who used to be fourth choice goalkeeper for Leeds United. Nicky?

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Nick Drake was quite a sprinter/hurdler, wasn't he?

Yannick Noah.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yanni was a competitive swimmer in his native Greece.

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

stuart murdoch, footballer

Murdoch used to be an amateur boxer, not a footballer. Unless that's a pun on the beloved former MK Dons manager.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

I forget which EPMD dude was the college b-ball star...?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Rod Stewart pursued a career as a footballer before switching to music.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Julio Iglesias was youth team keeper for Real Madrid before a car accident ended his playing career.

Robert Pollard was a good basketball player in high school...he also pitched a no-hitter in college, I think.

Vince Neil was good at baseball.

Ced G from Ultramagnetic MC was a big time basketball player I've read in an interview w/Kool Keith.

I think Joe Elliot from Def Leppard was good at soccer.

I think Gibby from Butthole Surfers was also an athlete, basketball if I recall.

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

And, of course, Des O'Connor turning out for my beloved Northampton Town before his nation-defining career as a crooner and talk show host.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

MC Harvey has always been a non-league player during his (now slightly quieter) musical career, he's currently at Lewes.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Kanye Westlife himself, Simon Webbe, only took up standing around without a shirt and occasionally singing R&B after he fucked his leg up training for Port Vale.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

also: followup to pollard...in the old Watch Me Jumpstart VHS documentary, you can see him shooting the fucking lights out at the basketball court in Dayton.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Eugene from Oxbow is an Ultimate Fighter, too...

...I think some of the Gwar dudes did some pro wrestling for a bit as well in the late 90s in some smaller league.

S/D athletes who make music

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

What about Scott Radsinsky, singer of the SoCal punk rock bands Pulley and Ten Foot Pole. He pitched for a long time with the Dodgers and White Sox but was into hardcore before his pitching career and resumed singing after he retired from baseball.

Jack Johnson was being groomed as a professional surfer before his music career took off. Isn't one of the late 80's (second wave) Powell Peralta pro skater dudes doing kind of folksy ninja tune style insturmental hip hop or something?

Nelly was a pretty good baseball player. I think he was even drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Garth Brooks went through spring training (and maybe a bit of the regular season? I remember watching one of the games on TV) with the San Diego Padres. Not long after the Chris Gaines thing I think.
