I did a search and didn't find a thread so: Here is where we discuss organizing a non-Voice version of P&J for 2006, hopefully with Xgau and Chuck's involvement, and somebody somewhere steps up to lead the effort.

(Or, Here is where someone directs me to the appropriate thread.)

If we do this, please please please please don't call it "Pazz and Jop"!!!

"Wee & twindie & hoken tip-hop"

Sounds like a job for MisterPoll.com

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 October 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Surely the Voice owns Pazz and Jop (and didn't someone report on here earlier that they're planning on continuing it)?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Carl -- from what I've been led to believe, New Times are still going ahead with Pazz and Jop, although it may be in a different form than in past years, since they may not realize what they've gotten themselves into.

I like the idea of an alternate poll, though. It could be like the two polls (coaches/sportswriters) for college-football rankings.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

I keep hearing from reputable sources that they are still going to do it (as they ought to, it's one of the publication's signature events), so it may be unnecessary.

Also, here's where we've been talking about it: new eds. say voice music section "too academic"?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

i always hated the name of the poll

gear (gear), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

might as well call it "SQUEE!"

gear (gear), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

"Pazz & Jop" was a joke based on Jazz & Pop magazine, from which Christgau stole the points system and the idea of the poll.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

"Squeee and Hoyay"

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 October 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

I've been reading P&J since 1976 and the idea of doing it without Christgau makes me very sad.

I guess my question is whether, after the firings, it is ethical for critics to participate if the Voice does it. (Apologies for using ILM as a critics' clubhouse, but it's the closest there is.) But I'll check the other thread (which I thought was dead), before going on.

carl w (carl w), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

new times has a right to do what they want, they weren't being unethical; they were being twattish at the worst. so the critics can do what they want. i don't think ethics really comes into play.

gear (gear), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Ethical? B/c they fired some friends of yours?

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 October 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't ask whether the Voice was being ethical or not. Twattish is probably right. But is it ethical then to reward twattishness? Is it ethical to play along with the mistreatment of one's colleagues?

I've never had a conversation with either Chuck or Xgau, so this isn't about my "friends." It's old-fashioned solidarity that I have in mind.

But I've moved it to the other thread.

carl w (carl w), Friday, 20 October 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

oh god layman's ethics
