SO MANY NEIL YOUNG THREADS, SO LITTLE TIME.
Do we have a thread about Neil's love for model trains? There are plenty of good stories about that.

hell i dont even like the fucker's music, i just wonder how he pulled that stunt off (besides, i can think of twenty reprise artists id rather listen to than neil or frank)(and if we cant get this esoteric on the ILX site, then thats fifteen different kinds of wrong, right there)

Rosie Flores and the Jesus and Mary Chain both put records out on Reprise in the mid-'80s.

"Rosie Flores and the Jesus and Mary Chain both put records out on Reprise in the mid-'80s."

But that was AFTER they revived it. I'm talking about the period between 1977-1985***. Neil Young was the only act to record for Reprise during those years that was NOT from Snotra's inner circle (I think Sylvia Sims and Dean Martin had Reprise LP's during that era as well, but they were Sinatra's buddies).

according to a very poor & unsourced Wikipedia article:

In the late 1970s, Joni Mitchell and Captain Beefheart having left the label, Sinatra expressed a wish to be the sole artiste on Reprise - but Neil Young refused to leave.

OK, you're right--the albums in question were '86-'87.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 23 October 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

Neil Young beat Frank Sinatra!

I find it hard to believe Ol Blue Eyes said to himself "No Captain Beefheart? Fuck this shit!"

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Monday, 23 October 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

"...but Neil Young refused to leave."

Yeah, right, we can guess how THAT convo went - "okay, kid, if ya wanna hang with me and Dino that bad, go right ahead..."

Besides, Mitchell and Beefheart had BEEN gone from Reprise for a few years when Sinatra pared down the roster in '77, so obviously Wikipedia is no expert there.

No, I believe Thomas Tallis is entirely correct. That's certainly what I heard at the time, all the other artists were moved over to other affiliated labels as appropriate, but Neil refused.

"No, I believe Thomas Tallis is entirely correct. That's certainly what I heard at the time, all the other artists were moved over to other affiliated labels as appropriate, but Neil refused."

What was his reason for refusing?

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Monday, 23 October 2006 06:25 (nineteen years ago)

dunno -- maybe just as an FU gesture to frankie?!? sinatra et. al. weren't exactly at the peak of their hipness during the 70s, after all.

besides, neil left (was told to leave?) reprise circa 1982 or thereabouts, whenever trans came out and started that whole weird geffen era of his. after which i bet NY WISHED that he still was dealing with frankie.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 23 October 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I don't think it was an FU. I always thought of it as a weird gesture of respect. And weirdness.

Actually, Reprise released a half-dozen or so Jimi Hendrix LPs (straight compilations as well as stuff from the vaults) between '77-85. But he obviously wasn't recording during that period, so I guess that doesn't count.
