Why people like certain kinds of music?

Hi! Are there books out there explaining why people like Lil Jon, or certain types of melodies, or why people get uncomfortable listening to stuff they haven't heard and will want to put on what they're familiar with, or what people like about music in general, or how to make an artful song that's also commercially viable in an age of radio music getting dumbed down beyond our wildest dreams?

There is popular "The Art of Appreciating Lil Jon" with foreward by Alistair Cooke

actually, that post sounded a little bitter, when i didn't mean for it to be. i do HATE lil jon, though.

i guess, most importantly, that i want to learn about how to make an artful song when most people will only like very, very simple and repetitive stuff, and figure out why that happens.

As for how to sell great art in huge amounts to the masses, go to B and look up The Beatles.

xpost: I think it may happen again, but it requires you aren't afraid of combining artful experimentation with the awareness that you should always have some catchy choruses and, generally, tunes.

So, that is, the experimentation has to be in other ways than getting rid of traditional tonality and songwriting form. There are so many other ways.

Was once told by one of the bosses of Warp that their most typical fan was an architecture student/architect. Not sure why...
