What did they actually do post-bleep that was actually good? Other than maybe Mission Venice, Ethnic Majority and 70s/80s, the rest is bland as porridge - prove me wrong.

Prolly my least favourite Warp act, except for "Les Nuits".

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

why don't you like 'Les Nuits'? other than it being a pointless rewrite of something he had already done twice before?

ha ha sorry, i read that the wrong way round

Actually Red Snapper had a fairly high dross to good ratio too.

I was always highly suspicious of Mira Calix. Sounded like a five year old left to go apeshit on a pre-programmed MIDI keyboard.

BUT THAT'S A GOOD THING

(she maybe is a bit tune-light)

'Aftermath', 'Dextrous', 'Sal Batardes' all great. Presumably Evelyn felt he couldn't keep making stuff like that for too long and had to evolve musically and to him this meant indulging the obsession with Forge/Peterson-approved soul, jazz and funk further - resulting in alleged 'blandness' thereafter. I quite like 'Finer' (more so the Paul Nice mix) and 'Thinking Of Omara' from 'Carboot Soul' but he fell between two stools with much of this stuff. I don't see what makes '70s/80s' 'not bland' in relation to anything else like that tho.

Fire in the Middle...Fire in the Middle...Fire in the Middle...

I don't actively hate them but I do find them uncomfortably Acid Jazz quite often.

70's/80's is the only thing on Mind Elevation that doesn't punch boredom into me from every angle. "Know My Name" is probably the most abhorrent thing I've heard in recent memory, sounding like something that wouldn't even have been digestible off of the cover of Popshop magazine circa 1989.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

admittedly the smoker's delight and carboot soul albums aren't too offensive and the latter even has a tune or two.

Didn't Mira Calix work for Warp and then start going out with one of Autechre and then suddenly find herself with a record deal?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

most of carboot soul is lovely

i thought she was doing it with Venetian Blinds (and they were making an album out of the recordings of their sex). (xpost)

She was PR at Warp I think, and yeah she was in a relationship with an Autech. But that line of reasoning is well dodgy.

You're thinking of Hecate vs Venetian Snares 's Nymphomatriarch ep which is actually a very funny listen once you know what it's all about. Crazy beats pinging around in the ususal way and then "Does that hurt?" "ooooh yeeeesss!" "Good" PING! PONG! PANG! DINKADINKA!

Noodle, the line of reasoning may be dodgy, but then so is her music so suspicion is a little aroused.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

It was Rachel Hectate that was doin' it with Venetian Snares. The resulting album 'Nymphomatriarch' has far too many moments where you go 'Mmm. I know what THAT sound is. Eeew'.

Mira Calix's Warp releases are fantastic, particularly that insect suite she did, 'Nunu'.

I can't bear to listen to anything post-'Smoker's Delight' by Nightmares On Wax.

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Mira's stuff certainly is delightfully crunchy. It's not as Pop as most of the Warp stuff of that era.
