The Voodoo Lounge Defense & Relocation Fund: A Safe, Supportive Thread Where We Can Discuss Late Period Stones (no haterz allowed!)

SO.....the guy that records my band burned me a copy of Voodoo Lounge by the Stones...I was expecting it to suck, but this is pretty good! (At least the first half I listened to on the way to work)....Sparks Will Fly, Love is Strong, and You Got Me Rockin' are all alot better than I remember...and The Worst is sort of Keith inventing the last couple of Bob Dylan records a half-decade before Bob did....there's also a wierd new-wave skiffle beat type song that is produced in a wierd, hollowed out way (but it actually works!)...and a harpsichord song about how Mick is sad cuz his little hussie is going to leave him for a younger hotttt dude (altho maybe she's mad cuz he did her in butt in the song before - Sparks Will Fly)....

...Mick also rhymes Sparks Will Fly with "sharks will cry", which someone should email to MF Doom.

Basically, I've decided that if someone like, say, Arthur Lee had released an album as good as Voodoo Lounge before his death, everyone would have shit their pants....it's way better than You Are the Quarry by Morrissey and that was seen as a big "return to form"...

Any other gems from late period Stones people wanna discuss? I'm especially looking for recommendations on cool album tracks from stuff like Steel Wheels, Bridged to Babylon, etc....I know there was some weird rarities comp in the late 90s too....

(also if anyone is thinking of being all boring like "OH Gawd they should have died after Exile, they're such a sad parody of themselves now" please go somewhere else, we've all heard that shit like a bazillion times and thought it ourselves, I wanna get PMA on this tip)

need to make this more controversial...okay how about.....Voodoo Lounge is a far better rock album than the new Hold Steady (only kinda joking)

Search: all of "Dirty Work." And going back further, the disco-blues workout of "Everything is Turning to Gold," from the B-side of "Shattered."

Love Is Strong is exactly as good as "Wicked As It Seems" off Main Offender. I ::heart:: "Teh Worst" and the harpsichord song ("New Faces").

"One Hit" and "Saint Of Me" would be the obv. picks from Under Cover and Bridges.

Alfred Soto to thread.

i like the harpsicord song too! it's kinda like a throwback to aftermath or something...

is bridges to babylon any good?

i'm planning in getting hip to all this shit and trying to make a 2CD comp of awesome post-Tattoo You stones album traxx!

the worst is really great!

I don't think I've listened to any of their records in their entirety post-Undercover, but judging the singles and handful of album tracks I HAVE heard, Voodoo Lounge seems like the high-water mark of the last 20 years.

i've always wanted to hear Undercover? Is it good?...I remember thinking that the video for Undercover of the Night was creepy when i was a kid....

Depends on where you want to draw the line on late period Stones. If you're including Steel Wheels then I'll speak up for "Slipping Away" and "Continental Drift."

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

i've decided to include everything after "Tattoo You"! i'm inclusive!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

(and any recommendations of traxx that are overlooked gems would be much appreciated - thx elvis and others!)

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

the recent studio albums are far from their best, but they're not their worst either. (Dirty Work still claims that prize)

Undercover is not amazing, but that's a pretty overlooked album, especially given that Tattoo You is grossly overrated.

Actually, the Stones are really great at alternating between overrated and overlooked records every release.

Bridges to Babylon really seemed like the end, but A Bigger Bang is far better than could have been expected. Of all the post Tattoo You records, I'd grab that one first.

If the new Who record is as good as the 11 minute song, it'll be a pretty interesting time for classic rock, with the Stones, Bob and The Who all experiencing a late-career creative surge.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Steel Wheels is one of my favorite Stones albums (search especially "Almost Hear You Sigh" and "Continental Drift" - also "Sleep Tonight" off Dirty Work and "Infamy" off A Bigger Bang). Also, Stripped is their best live album by miles (Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out included). And not to get all Jann Wenner on you or anything, but there are lots of goodies on Jagger's Wandering Spirit.

What is the title of the weird hollowed-out new wave skiffle beat song, Matt?

Patrick (Patrick), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

i happen to really like "blinded by rainbows".

Emily B (Emily B), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

i'll also rep for steel wheels. mick dedicating "mixed emotions" to axl = beyond classic.

Bridges To Babylon and Voodoo Lounge are both good.

the Keith songs at the end of BT are classics.

"I was a hooker, losin' her looks" might be the most honest line ol' Mick ever wrote.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 October 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

mick sure gets all pervy on this one! yikes!
