and

almost everything from x genre sounds the same

...but even if you are interested in a particular type of music, it can take some effort 'til you find a song that breaks it for you. What songs broke what genres for you?

The Clash made me want to like Reggae, and the college station in my area had a Reggae show on Tuesday nights. But it took a while. I got the live Bob Marley record 'cause the Rolling Stone record guide said I should, but it didn't do much for me. Eventually, Mr. Tavengwa, the local DJ won me over by playing stuff from Black Uhuru's Anthem week after week. "What is Life" is what really got me. That, and Dillinger's "Cocaine in My Brain" and Yellowman's "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng".
