statement from the remaining members, Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John and Roger Taylor, said a "gulf" had developed between them which meant they could no longer work effectively together.

It continued: "Although obviously disappointed and saddened about this, we are excited about the next chapter of the Duran Duran story."

Next chapter, the wilderness years part two?

Pick Of The Pops, November 2022:

"Now I bet you thought I was going to be sarcastic about that record, didn't you? Well I'm not - it's a happy pop song and I love it. "Rio" by Duran Duran, new in at number thirteen."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 26 October 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha, very funny. BTW, word is that this is because Andy was disappointed with the musical direction the band was taking with Timbaland at the producer's helm and with Timberlake swinging by to collaborate on a song or two. Apparently the band's been wanting a hip-hop sound (oh I hurled a long time ago) and Andy didn't want to work with that. To that I say good for him. He's making a wise decision in walking away from what he obviously sees as a huge mistake on the rest of the band's part and I am totally on his side. I have been saying for awhile now that I will never purchase this upcoming album; now I know for sure that I'm making the right choice.

Sorry, had to comment about this. (krushsister), Thursday, 26 October 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

With the memory of their unforgettable rendition of "911 Is A Joke" still fresh in his mind, you can hardly blame him.

Wow! Timberlake swinging by with a lifeline for another hasbeen pop act! Who's next? Kelly Marie? The Dooleys?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 26 October 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

a-GAIN?!?!?

Uh, Carlin, you do know that Andy hadn't been a member of the band for practically a decade when they recorded/released that song. Also, one of their forays into hip-hop turned out to be a success; "White Lines" has become a fan favorite. Really, though, Duran could release the most amazing album anyone's ever heard (some might argue they've done that already) and you'd look down your nose at them, so just shut up.

Can't wait for "Take It Easy '07"

I don't think he'll make the same mistake twice, but I'd definitely welcome "I Might Lie '07". Maybe with Andy Jr. doing rhythm guitar and backup singing duties, thus bringing everything full circle (Andy Jr. was the baby in the "Don't Let Me Die Young" video).

You can never be too mean with Durannies.

Don't you assholes have a Girls Aloud record to go and wank over or something?

This means I'll *still* have never seen classic lineup Duran. :-(

I too have read far too many over-1,000-word Dennis the Menace biographies. The Beano's not just for academics, damn it!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

There's only one person here showing bad manners, and it isn't Dee.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

I believe the correct spelling is: "MISOGYNIST."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

See, Dee, what I always found interesting about the Classic Era Duran Duran was the obvious tension between the more "rock" elements of the band (Andy, John... well, the Taylors, basically) and the more pop/art elements. Which became far more obvious in their solo projects as they splintered.

It's just interesting how, after twenty intervening years, the tensions are still there, to the breaking point. Again.

I wonder if they'll get Warren Cuccoochachoo back. With his branded Duran Dildos, ha ha. As irritating as he is, I liked the elements his guitar work bought.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Was that the straight split that became Arcadia and Power Station?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty much. (though had Roger quit by then? Cannot remember.) Dee would know better than I, her knowledge of 80s synthpop is admirably encyclopaedic.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

In the meantime, most of us know they would never ever have been able to come up with anything even half as good as their first three albums anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

x post
Roger was in Arcadia.

I pretty much prefer Pop Trash from 2000 to their reunion album. AND Warren wrote some inspired stuff for PT. Wouldn't mind seeing him again on board.

JML (JML), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I think my favourite post-Classic-Five album remains Medazzaland. And Warren did some great guitar work on that - he's far more of a spacey-pedal-texture guitar player than Andy ever was - Andy was far more straight ahead rock. Which means, really I should prefer Warren. I do like his guitar playing, *he* just gives me the creeps.

Going Through The Motions (kate), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

There are no classic-five, just classic-three. "Notorious" and "Big Thing" were the WORST albums they ever did. On "Big Thing" they didn`t even sound like Duran Duran. Everything in the 90s were steps in the right direction, as at least they had put behind those pathetic attempts to sound "funky".

The Arcadia album was great though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Classic-FIVE PIECE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Arcadia was great but folks need to listen to Japan. Duran Duran for adults, y'know.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Saturday, 28 October 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahah! I just came across Exorcising Ghosts in my CD collection while looking for things to sell for much needed cash and of course even though I haven't pulled it out for years, I would also never sell it either.

But seriously, Duran Duran gone hip-hop? Jesus, the mind boggles.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway I shouldn't talk. I don't think I've even heard "White Lines", so I'll shut up. I left Duran a long, long time ago.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

I was glad the Duran Duran crazy woman posted though. Didn't she used to call herself Many Coloured Halo or whatever it was?

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

Arcadia was great but folks need to listen to Japan. Duran Duran for adults, y'know.

I agree somewhat. But then, Japan only released three proper albums (the early glam stuff was rubbish), and whoever wants more of at least partly the same stuff (well, without the wonderful use of fretless bass and marimbas, it must be admitted) has to go for early Duran Duran. Which is a lot better than their undeserved teenybopper reputation at the time.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 28 October 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

I liked "Your own way" but that's about it.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

I would suggest that if you like Japan, there are many better alternatives to DD to get your cool synth/disco/pop fix. (Frenchbloke to thread).

lexurian (lexurian), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Only on "White Lines".

do you ever read threads before posting to them?

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Monday, 30 October 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if they'll get Warren Cuccoochachoo back.

Hopefully never. With him, they sounded like some boring and crappy American R&B act, not the great archetypical extremely English-sounding New Romantic act they were during their prime.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 30 October 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Only on "White Lines".

I was referring to the news that the band supposedly want to go in a hip hop direction from here on out.

Why get Justin Timberlake if he's mixed in so low that he's totally inaudible?
