What Is the Chorus of Beck's "Girl"?

To me, it mostly sounds like he's singing "Masonna girl" or possibly "my sauna girl" but I'm pretty sure it's neither of these. I could maybe see "Masonic girl" but that seems unlikely too. A web search gives results ranging from "my summer girl" (which is what you'd expect in a pop song but doesn't actually sound like what he's singing to me) to "my cyanide girl" (doubtful unless "cyanide" has two syllables in SoCal, which I doubt) and "my sun-eyed girl" (which is pretty and sounds most likely) but mostly just "my ... girl". Has he commented on this or printed the lyrics in the liner notes (I just have a [legal] d/l)?

The lyrics in the liner notes actually say "my ... girl," so the bastard's being coy on us. I sing "sun-eyed," even though it's probably wrong.

"My dianetic girl"

My daughter and son-in-law disagreed about this and I was called upon to break the tie. My vote was/is for "summer girl." (Sorry, Maggie.)

Not that this really means anything, but when Indie Rock Karaoke bought a karaoke CD with this song on it, it was "my summer girl."

I was wondering about this myself a few months ago, my searches turned up "summer girl" but I never realized these lyrics were in dispute!

I will be singing "Masonna Girl" from now on.

Ok I just listened to it, and it's gotta my CYANIDE girl.
"I know I'm gonna make her die" + Cyanide is a recurring Beck Thing.
The other syllable is in there, sorta. I've heard a lot of people say it that way.

from whiskeyclone.net, which has it as "cyanide":

"Girl" is one of the catchier songs Beck has ever written. The song starts with a Gameboy, that Beck had got which was hacked into and turned into a sequencer. Beck was playing with it and it became the intro. The music is fun and poppy, and the Gameboy gives it some flavor along with the slide guitar. I read one cool description which said it was like the Beach Boys doing the robot.

At the same time though, it's one of the darker lyrics he's ever written. Beck's been asked about it a couple of times. Once he started to say it was "happy and romantic," but then immediately changed his mind when he remembered the lyrics. "The lyrics are very dark, so maybe that's not true," he realized.

Asked about the darkness, Beck said,

"Originally, the lyrics to 'Girl' were really upbeat, and then it didn't work for me somehow. You need the dichotomy. If you're doing something happy and light, you need the shadows. That was something that the Pixies did so well. Frank Black is a genius at these happy songs, and then you listen to the lyrics and they're based on (Spanish film director Luis) Bunuel films of cows' eyes getting cut."

Beck has referred to the Pixies on this point a couple of times. This dichotomy is what makes the song really interesting. The first verse has roses and diamond rings and the sun and the beach. But looking closer, the diamond ring isn't real, the sun has a noose on it, and bones are bleaching in the sand. These are powerful, striking images. It's quite a portrait Beck has painted here.

____________

A word about the chorus is necessary. Initially, we had a report of a song called "Summer Girl." Then when the unmastered version of Guero leaked, we matched it to this song, naturally. Only thing was, Beck doesn't really sound like he's singing "summer girl." So, confusion.

Then when Guero was officially announced, the title was changed "Girl." Clearly, that's an inferior title to "Summer Girl," so fans were baffled. Or at least I was. Anyway, we still weren't sure what the chorus was! Beck.com confirms that the early name of the song was indeed "Summer Girl," but it's fairly clear now that is not the chorus.

Beck led us on, as in the liner notes of the album, the chorus is printed as "My...girl." Like that, ellipses and everything. Thanks Beck.

So now we're stuck with lots of theories until someone can straight-up ask Beck, and gets a real answer in return. I'm kind of feeling that it's "cyanide girl" from listening to a bootleg or two; it fits the lyrics, imo. Since this is my site, that's what I'm putting in the lyrics above. Others hear "sun-eyed," or "sinner," or even "cyan eyed." Also one theory is that it's "Masonna girl." Some probably still hear "summer."

UPDATE: Beck was finally asked by a journalist about the lyrics. He's not talking. Neither is his keyboardist, Brian LeBarton, by the way. This is what was written:

Equally unclear is the chorus to Beck's current single, "Girl," a lovely summertime jam which appears to be about killing a girl. In the Guero liner notes, the lyric is written as "Hey, my ... Girl," and Beck isn't about to fill in that ellipsis. In fact, in traditional Beck style, he's claiming that the whole thing is the result of a stream-of-consciousness, off-the-cuff ad lib. Which he decided to leave in, since it fit with the song's overall vibe.

"In the studio I was just vocalizing, 'cause I have the melody but hadn't written the lyrics. Sometimes when I have the microphone I just make up words and I try to go with what sounds good. So that was just me improvising, and we ended up leaving it like that. So what you hear is basically the first time I recorded it," Beck said. "It's kind of a love song, mixed in with some grit and some mystery. Using different words and images to describe the feeling. It's a raggedy love song."
