I have it laying around, and have not listened to it yet. What awaits me? Is it genius?

LISTEN (WITHOUT PREJUDICE)

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Sunday, 29 October 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

a very hard thing to do.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

This reminds me of my own occasional "Irresistible urge" threads where I get / buy an album previously considered to be terrible, and find it's actually not that bad. (Dylan's "Dylan" album most notably).

Go for it! I'm interested!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

I did this with Rudebox...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 30 October 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Did what? There's no picture.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 30 October 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Go for it!

Especially if you are a young gun.

The Real Esteban Buttez (EstieButtez1), Monday, 30 October 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

I remember the single.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 30 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

My main memory of this record is that Rolling Stone actually forgot to put the half star after the "1/2" at the top of their review.

I just ordered this used for 13 cents off Amazon because of this thread.

I love you guys.

:-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

ok, believe it or not, this was worth the 13 cents + shipping, which was around, oh, a buck and 13 cents... this is a perfect example of an album that was designed to be derided by everyone at the time, 1990, but listening to it now, well... shit.. either this means Ridgeley was overbashed, or this may say more about how much music had devolved since.. probably a mixture of both.

This is basically drum machine pop metal/Sweet type stuff with Andrew trying to sing all Bon Jovi-esque but missing the mark completely, which sounds a bit awkward but still better than actual Bon Jovi. I wouldn't be surprised if Chinn and Chapman had produced this (but they didn't.) That vocoder madness on "The Price Of Love"! and then "FLAAAAAaaaaame!" (not kidding you!)

Too much MIDI and tinny guitar on an otherwise decent pop record. "Hangin'" has weird sounding drum machine action going on... well, weird for what I expected. Hmm, ok starting "Mexico", this is starting to sound drab... oh wait "Kiss Me" redeems it again! More of that crazy Sweet+vocoder shit. Oh shit. "Baby Jane" is just bad, like Rolling Stones Dirty Work.. ok better than that album in all means given the dreamy party here, and also a departure from the tinny midi guitar-in-a-box sound so far. And what of the final track "Shake (Hardcore)"? Oh, just a dance remix of "Shake". Oh wait, dirty female samples, but more like dirty MILF samples. Interesting gated guitar work here... sounds like Gaye Bikers On Acid during their better moments. I get it... Grebo!

Oh well. Yup, it was worth exactly $1.13. I'm probably feeling more ripped off that this takes up more mass in space than whatever it costed.

Yay! He's listening to Andrew Ridgeley so You don't have to!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Let's do this baby track by track.

1) RED DRESS
Chorus: "She got some first class long legs, it's a sin and that's my thing."

Major Impression- Sounds like something Vince Neil would be singing.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

2) SHAKE
Chorus: "SHAKE IT, listen up baby/SHAKE IT hold tight lady/SHAKE IT I can't take a maybe/ SHAKE IT gonna getcha crazy...etc..."

Major Impression- The single (?). I like it more than "I Want Your Sex".

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

3) THE PRICE OF LOVE
[Everly Brothers cover]

Major Impression- Did this come before or after Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer"?

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Would have to be after - "Livin' On A Prayer" was '87.

LC (Damian), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

4) FLAME
Chorus: "Sweet naked flame, why must our pleasure fire from pain? Sweet naked flame, why must we always play this game."

Major Impression- Not too bad, spacey. Sounds like a pop-metal version of Styx or ELO?

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Would have to be after - "Livin' On A Prayer" was '87.

Ah, thanks. That's kind of what I figured.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

5) HANGIN'
[Chic Cover]

Major Impression- As might be imagined.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

END OF SIDE A; INTERMISSION

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 11 November 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

and then?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand THEN?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

5) MEXICO
Chorus: "Hell, step on the gass, come and get trashed/Here we go! Mexico!/Senoritas, we got the case/Here we go! Mexico!"

Spanish chorus: "Que bonita, hola. Rumba caliente paragozar." [Repeat]

Major Impression- Madre de dios!

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, that's number 6, not 5 (like anybody's actually keeping track).

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

7) BIG MACHINE
Chorus: "So come on baby let's ride/Forty cubic inches and leather hide/ So get on honey, get a high/ Get on my hog and get the vibe."

Major Impression- Too obvious.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Also, harmonica solo on that track provided by one Mark Feltham...he of Spirit of Eden fame?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

8) KISS ME
Chorus: "Baby, yeah if you want to swing/ Baby, yeah you've got to do one thing/ Honey, yeah get off your knees and please, please, please..."

Maybe not part of the chorus, technically, but immediately follows it and warrants special mention: "...Kiss me, stroke me, pinch me, poke me/ Hold me, please me, taunt me, squeeze/Love me, use me, bite me, bruise me/Prick me, tease me/ Come on and touch me!"

Major Impression- ??????

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

9) BABY JANE
Chorus: "So please, Mister Neat/On my knees I you entreat/ Do me wrong, slur my name/ But give me back baby Jane"

Major Impression- Different from the other tracks, going for a softer, acoustic blues shuffle vibe. Feltham is back. Acoustic bass provided by one Danny Thompson...he also of Spirit of Eden fame?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

10) SHAKE (HARDCORE)

Major Impression- Dance remix of "Shake", with various sampled sound effects (police sirens, sexual moaning). Andrew Ridgeley vs. EMF: Fite!

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

FINIS.

"Baby Jane" is just bad, like Rolling Stones Dirty Work.. ok better than that album in all means given the dreamy party here

Now you've gone too far! If you want to compare it to Rod Stewart's "Baby Jane," you might be on to something...

damn I love this thread
