"Courtney Love's name should be right next to Bob Dylan when they say 'best lyricist of all time.'" - Linda Perry

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 30 October 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'll listen to it... I wouldn't say I'm excited for it (I was excited for AMERICA'S SWEETHEART and that was total trash bar 1 or 2 songs), but I've always liked Courtney.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 30 October 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

i'll listen to it! linda's going a little overboard with the dylan thing, but count me in as a cl fan. i think this record's going to be her live through this pt. 2 -- more acoustic-grungy and raw-nervy than any of her stuff from celebrity skin onward.

I'll admit that BBC documentary (which I watched in 6 parts on YouTube) has piqued my interest. I think it's going to be more along the lines of Live Through This.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 30 October 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

i would listen to it! i would not necessarily expect to enjoy or like it though.

courtney love's lyrics are in a different league to bob dylan's. not just because they're good - though they mostly are, even recently - but because dylan's are trite platitudinous hippie bullshit. most lyrics are better than dylan's. except joan osborne.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Her last comeback record was great, why would this be any different. As for Dylan's "trite platitudinous hippie bullshit", what the hell are you talking about? Have you ever even listened to Dylan? Hippie Bullshit!

dan. (dan.), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

personally I don't think she's penned a decent lyric since Good Sister/Bad Sister

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Courtney was best when she was ripping off Bauhaus and Babes In Toyland. To this day, still.

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Her last record was pretty good, so, yeah, count me in.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 30 October 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm already giddy with anticipation. I dunno about Dylan, but I've already gone on the record that Courtney Love, lyricist >>>>>> Kurt Cob1an, lyricist.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yup. Chuck Eddy to thread!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

bob dylan was never ever ever a hippie. i mean you might as well call randy fuckin newman a hippie.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

hah, like the lex would know who randy newman is

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

courtney is much more interesting these days for being a plastic surgery casualty, her days as a credible musician/artist are probably behind her

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

I liked her last record. In fact, I like all her records, really. That doesn't mean we need any more records from her, but I'll be happy to leech a promo.

I just hope she stays clean and quiet, so that I don't have to witness people defending her addictions and resulting asinine behaviors.

I hope she doesn't kill herself, either.

don weiner (don weiner), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Courtney who?

vartman (novaheat), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno about Dylan, but I've already gone on the record that Courtney Love, lyricist >>>>>> Kurt Cob1an, lyricist.

can i get on that record too?

timmy tannin (pompous), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

i liked her better when she was still collaborating with pat maley. *wink*

dream torture (blood bitch), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man. OH MAN. Diane Sawyer just interviewed her on Good Morning America. Mortifying.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

She was coherent but clearly buzzed on something.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

In another era, the folks at GMA probably woulda never let her on the morning shows quite so drugged up, but now I suspect they're hoping for viral video circulation.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

I am looking forward to this album... "America's Sweetheart" was such a bubblegum thrill (ie, it lots its taste for me after about 13 months) that I can't see her doing that again. I worry if Perry's still on board it's going to be lots of ISSUEZ BASED ANGZT which is probably the last thing Courtney needs to do right now. She needs something vaguely contemporary (emo marching band sounds) over something she's comfortable with (Fleetwood Mac coke AOR). Actually she should just let the Scissor Sisters write an album for her and do some kinda faux-drag act.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Man, if only.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

hey, hey
you know what to do
oh, baby drive away to malibu

what's wrong with this? malibu is a fantastic song!

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

One of the best songs ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

people were talking about her genius as a lyricist, song itself is fine

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

The only problem with "Celebrity Skin" is Courtney was listening to too much fucking Pavement at the time and thought it'd be cute to do all that Malkmus "Forgot your cryptic crossword on the tube? Try this!" shit. It isn't.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

What are you talking about? Fuck Pavement! It's obvious that solo Stevie Nicks and Cheap Trick were on her stereo.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

She said in a couple of interviews around the time of the album that although Fleetwood M were the obvious sonic influence on the album (apparently that was Corgan's idea, not her's... no, I don't buy that either), the lyrics were deliberately Pavement-y. Select Magazine, ...July? 1999 edition.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

people were talking about her genius as a lyricist

And they was right!

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

hey, YOU know what to do

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

That's "you know WHAT to do" - the problem may be your ear?

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

But srsly, if you want to go after her on the lyrical front, you could find easier targets than "Malibu."

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

i think YOU missed the point of my last post, but never no mind

i don't really care one way or the other about CL (esp. in 2006), i just always found that lyric lazy/throw away (but maybe that's what people like about it)

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

Courtney plugging new book on THE VIEW yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5tsx_2WLH8

If someone can find the Good Morning America thing, post it.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 2 November 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

i listened to 'malibu' yesterday, it really is astonishingly great. i don't understand what's wrong with that lyric either, it doesn't seem lazy or throwaway.

i heard it for ages as "baby drive away from malibu" in the first chorus, and thereafter "baby drive away to malibu".

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 November 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

The eatery is called Hiro, and it’s synonymous with the way Courtney Love is feeling these days. She didn’t die. She became a hero.

WOW...

Stevie D, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

The lyrics are "defined, hummable and well-constructed"?

Count me in amongst the America's Sweetheart fans.

Martin Van Burne, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha well it is fox. this was linked on courtneylove.com btw

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Pacific Coast Highway still gets stuck in my head sometimes and I've only heard a short clip. Closest to something like "Malibu," if you haven't heard it.

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

In “PCH,” Courtney sings — maybe to her dead husband Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth —- “I’m up on Pacific Coast Highway/With your gun in my hand.”

*barf* still pimpin that corpse eh

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

You'd rather she become Mary Poppins?

But more pressingly:
"Should opera legend and ultimate New Yorker Beverly Sills’ memorial service be full of music or speeches? Should it be produced by the Metropolitan Opera, her manager or best friend Barbara Walters? And was Walters even her best friend?"

Martin Van Burne, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'd rather she retire and raise her kid and stop clamoring for attention from the rest of us like some sort of needy-attention-whore-robot

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh, go whack off to your rachael ray rape fantasy

Me too! I hate when celebrities clamor for my attention rather than devote themselves to full-time child-rearing!

Martin Van Burne, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

name one guy someone says "he should go raise his kid instead of having a career." about.

PS Frances Bean is like 15, dude. You'd rather she wait three years?

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

name one celebrity guy who's a single dad who's also a drug addict prone to violent outbursts

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

altho we all know lolz anyone who dares to criticize courtney is a mysogynist amirite

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

so a drug addict prone to violent outbursts should be spending more time with her kid.

No Shakey, that's pretty specifically "get back in the kitchen" type stuff

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

I see you didn't "get" the irony of me posting a picture of a barefoot woman (that people like to think is my "rape fantasy") in the kitchen

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

No Shakey, that's pretty specifically "get back in the kitchen" type stuff

*yawn* tell it to Patti Smith. Or Exene Cervenka. Or any of the women from the Diggers etc.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

x-post
you can't see her feet in that pic

The difference there is I'm still interested in Courtney Love's music.

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Did those women retire to raise their children because you told them to?

Martin Van Burne, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha seriously give us a fucking break

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile in teh Courtney'back stakes: another year, another Love record unlistened-to.

t**t, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Did those women retire to raise their children because you told them to?

most adults manage to make perfectly capable decisions without my personal input. Unfortunately, Courtney does not appear to be such an adult.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

and if Courtney has already been "attention-whoring" around for the past 15 years, a lot of good retiring NOW would do. That kid is basically grown. Maybe I could see your Patti Smith analogy if she was still a baby.

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

she needs to intervene now before Frances Bean ends up in a band with Sean Lennon and Wolfgang Van Halen

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think I hung out with my parents a grand total of 20 minutes from 15-18. Read in an interview somewhere, FBC is like a theater kid or something, she's not going in for that sort of thing.

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

The reason CL should stay away from making music is because it inevitably puts her in situations that her drug-addled persona cannot handle well. She should retire for herself first and her family second.

Either way, I totally look forward to hearing her latest music for free.

Dandy Don Weiner, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that's a good point, don. i can't wait to hear the record, but she seems to fall off the wagon or further off it every time she makes one..

daria-g, Monday, 23 July 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Pitchfork: It does seem like everyone from Hole has been busy: I saw Patty's band Upset earlier this year, and I was at Melissa's venue Basilica Hudson in upstate New York last year, and I read Eric's book a couple of years ago.

CL: Melissa's a real avid Pitchfork reader. Patti knows every single thing that's still going on with Drag City and Razor & Tie and every little label. Brody Dalle from Distillers was telling me how there are lots of cool little labels, which I'm not up on because I don't read Pitchfork everyday. I read Jezebel a lot. I've tried to tweet you guys and kiss your ass, but the dude in Portland just doesn't like me. So I'm like, "OK, fine."

Pitchfork: Portland?

CL: Isn't it based in Portland?

Pitchfork: No, we're in Brooklyn and Chicago.
