Although, this year is different.. Downloads now, if not rule, then are Loyal Retainer and buddy. What could it all mean?

Very possibly this.

It looks like this year's Nizlopi! (just on a quick look not listen to the first bit and the blurb by the side)

You know the young people and their download electronical culture (TYPATDEC)? I assume you do. I don't, really.

It seems to me that the key question is this: do TYPATDEC give each other downloads as gifts?

If not, then the Xmas chart might be the least download-related of the lot, no? As people's spends are going on presents and partying. If there are such things as download vouchers, these presumably get spent after the big day?

The modern world is most confusing.

All Angels' cover version of the Robbie Williams single Angels, the official single of the British Legion Poppy Appeal, is released in December. Take That's comeback single Patience is released next month.

However Gennaro Castaldo, spokesman for retailer HMV, believes Sir Cliff Richard may be in line for his fourth Christmas Number One, with a cover of his hit single Move It, featuring Queen guitarist Brian May.

"You can never rule out Sir Cliff when it comes to Christmas," said Mr Castaldo.

"And by teaming up with the likes of Brian May and Daniel O'Donnell, and their considerable fan bases, he's giving himself every chance of landing his 15th UK number one - putting him just two behind The Beatles."

Yes, I was aware of "Barry Scott," unfortunately.

I never got a single as a Christmas present (did anyone - under 30 years old - here?), and I have been known to enjoy popular music from time to time.

Oh you silly Brits and your Christmas Number One Single fixation.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Surely the Christmas no. 1 and Top of the Pops were intrinsically linked ... come to think of it I can't see much need for a chart (OK - Sunday top 40) now it's gone. On that note, why hasn't TOTP 2 been renamed TOTP? It has nothing to play second fiddle to any more.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

because it would be wrong for it to assume the original's title given the difference in format.

;_; (blueski), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

altho if it's good enough for monarchs...

;_; (blueski), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

The singles chart had been going strong for over a decade before TOTP started.

As I have said on many other similar threads, something like 70% of all record sales in Britain per year occur over the Xmas period, thus it is the prime market, thus the Xmas #1 hype.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

also there IS going to be an Xmas TOTP (i.e. not a TOTP2) this year, or so I read

Ooh - you know what I mean ;-) Anyway, it's good news there will be a Christmas show.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

not really. has been a pretty weak year.
