Don't laugh. It's for my dissertation.

Darkness On The Edge of Town: The Promised Land

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Hood - Outside Closer ('The Lost You') springs to mind instantaneously.

More soon...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

When I was first getting properly into music I had a theory that track 4 was always the best on an album. I believed it to such an extent that I often fooled myself that track 4 was really good even if it was rubbish.

NO LIST NOVEMBER on ILM - classic or lame?

Sonic Youth - DIRTY

Upcoming of Montreal album (Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?) has this contour through the first seven tracks where it builds up to the best song (track 6 - "A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger"), then reaches catharsis afterwards with this long track 7.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

...there's LOADS!

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour ('I Am The Walrus')
Blur - Leisure ('Sing')
There is a strong argument for The Boo Radleys - Giant Steps ('Rodney King (Song For Lenny Bruce)'), but I marginally prefer 'I've Lost The Reason'.
The Chemical Brothers - Surrender ('The Sunshine Underground')
The Cure - Pornography ('A Strange Day') (controversial, but personal preference)
There is a VERY strong argument for Elbow - Asleep In The Back ('Newborn'), but my personal choice would be 'Bitten By The Tailfly'.
The Electric Soft Parade - Holes In The Wall ('Silent To The Dark')
The Electric Soft Parade - The American Adventure ('The American Adventure')
The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic ('The Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saved The World')
Gomez - Bring It On ('Here Comes The Breeze')
There is an argument for Love - Forever Changes ('The Red Telephone'), but there really isn't because 'You Set The Scene' exists.
Mercury Rev - Yerself Is Steam ('Frittering') (this is the best example so far)
Mogwai - Government Commissions ('Like Herod')
Muse - Origin Of Symmetry ('Citizen Erased')
Pink Floyd - Meddle ('Echoes')
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun ('Vithrar Vel Til Loftirasa')
Slowdive - Souvlaki ('Souvlaki Space Station')
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger ('Somewhere')
Soundgarden (yes! again!) - Superunknown ('Head Down')
Spiritualized - Pure Phase ('Let It Flow')
SFA - Guerrilla ('Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home)')
My own favourite song on Talk Talk's 'Laughing Stock' is 'Runeii', but nobody else shares this opinion so DISCOUNT IT NOW. :-)
XTC - Apple Venus 1 ('Greenman')

Track 6 being the BEST song on all of those albums!

(I'm serious about Soundgarden btw. Those honestly are my favourite tracks on the two main albums. No shitting youse.)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait for NOVEMBER!!!!!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

a dissertation on track 6?

I mean, this would work well for standard 10 song albums, where track 6 was usually the first track off Side 2, which is usually the underrated hit compared to track 1...

but never mind me. Just sounds really arbitrary.

You're basically eliminating a lot of psych rock with this though, as most of those album are lucky if they even have 4 tracks. Maybe that's the final analysis?

"Greenman" is not the best song on Apple Venus. Get one "The Wheel and the Maypole".

'The Wheel And The Maypole' IS the best song on its album,

but its album is NOT Apple Venus 1. :P

Ha.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, on the of Montreal thing, the best song on the last album (The Sunlandic Twins) was "The Party's Crashing Us," which was the seventh track, but only because it's preceded by a short instrumental. Definitely some significant parallels in the sequencing of the two albums.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

The Breeders - Pod - When I Was A Painter

Ramzi Awn (rra123), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

oh jesus, I always make that mistake.

well, still, "The Last Balloon" > "Greenman" (although it's a bit closer)

c'mon dudes, list whilst you still can! only 5 1/2 hours to go!

(10 1/2 if yr an east coast yank)

(more if yr west coast)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Assuming you take the two parts of "The Box" as one track, the correct answer is Orbital, "In Sides" ("Out There Somewhere" -- which I am also taking to be one track), thank you, lock thread, see you on the next list thread in December.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

briefly considered, then discounted for the reasons you state.

out there somewhere part two on its own is the best thing orbital have done, anyway. nay, the last 4:50 of it alone suffices for me. :-)

you can lock it now.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

"Running, Returning" is track 6 on Akron/Family's self-titled album, and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the album. It must be said, however, that I am generally a track 9 man, myself.
