Did anyone catch them on their current tour? I don't consider myself a huge fan but after seeing them last weekend I was impressed. Good sound, positive energy; overall a great experience.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I saw them in Sheffield and didn't fall asleep either.

It reminded me of when I first saw Guided By Voices - they actually rocked.

The beardy bassist threw down some hilarious moves too.

I saw them in Pittsburgh, thought it was good, but there were less people onstage and it was less impressive overall than when I caught them in London 6 months ago.

I saw them in Asheville and they were great. Could do without Do Make Say Think and/or dude beside me talking about how awesome Do Make Say Think was, though.

I saw them in July at the Fuji Rock Festival, and they were excellent. They don't really have much of a profile in Japan yet, and they completely wowed the crowd. They had to play an encore which NEVER happens during daytime sets due to the tight time restrictions, but the audience clapped them back on. Several journalists named their performance as one of the festival's highlights. I can't say that I disagree.

5 guys playing the exact same power chord on their geetars. (as I have said elsewhere).

YEEhaw.

they're great when they have a time limit. When they don't, they tend to noodle and wank.

I think the highlight of the show (aside from Pacific Theme) for me was when the band completely stopped in the middle of a song to break up a fight in the audience between a couple of drunks. They started again from the beginning. That was kind of cool. I do understand the Zzzzzzz factor though.

I thought the guitar stuff was great, very powerful and well-arranged. Is it not clear that five guys playing the same (although they didn't all play in unison) thing on five different guitars/amps is not equivalent to just one guy playing it? I mean, do you go see an orchestra and say "Lame, those 12 cellists were all playing the same thing!"

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

Normally I'd agree, but by that logic BSS would need about 3 more bassists, 8 drummers and 5 dudes playing the rhodes. 12 cellists don't overpower a whole orchestra, because _each_ instrument has multiple parts and players. etc. etc.

The first time I saw them, Feb this year in Belfast, they were stunning. Really an incredibly joyous experience with perfect sound. The second time, at the Electric Picnic festival in Laois, ROI, they were also very good but the sound wasn't the best (as you might expect at a festival). Generally they're an excellent live act.

I've seen them multiple times live, what with living in Toronto and all. Thumbs up each time.

Always a good time. They are not all playing power chords either. They have some pretty accomplished guitarists in that band.

Saw them most recently on election night in DC.
Soundman had told them of the dems winning the house, so midsong Kevin Drew relayed this to the sold out venue. The whole place turned into an ecstatic uproar. It was a pretty special moment.

Other than that, though, the band seemed worn out and definitely ready for the hiatus they've been talking about.
