Why is this man still making music?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

the only mark ronson stuff i've ever had time for is his production on the new amy winehouse (because it sounds nothing like he usually does). otherwise he just makes overbaked white-boy funk which is only one step up from jamiroquai.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

.co.uk

hmmm. lets emphasise the uk side to his jay-z loving party scene.
still, i wanna hear the album, sounds like it could be a fun soundtrack for when the sun shines.

oh god and he did that horrid cover of that horrid radiohead song recently didn't he? yuck.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

It's a credit to Mark Ronson that he's somehow more annoying than both his sisters.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

can I tell you how long it took me to realize that the dude covering Radiohead's "Just" was in fact not the Spiders from Mars guy

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

I actually kinda loved the Radiohead cover.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

the ghostface track he did was good

robin (robin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Charlotte and Samantha Ronson

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

You may remember Samantha Ronson from her previous career as Roc-A-Fella's number 1 singer-songwriter.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Nobody else does.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Presumably Samantha Ronson, who he couldn't possibly be more annoying than, though I have only heard the Radiohead cover (which I liked a lot) and his Lily Allen remix, which I also think is pretty great.

the Ronson-produced cover of "Oh My God" by Lily Allen is really really really great too.

I dunno whether he or ?love did the Nikka Costa song "Everybody Got Their Something" but it has a really cool guitar/bass line. Rilly cool.

Jubalique (Jubalique), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

His Air remix with Rhymefest was decent.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

so he's produced oh my god + littlest things for lily allen and
lovelight for robbie? well he's alright by me.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

between this and hadouken and jamie t, new music in 2007 is making me more nauseous than ever before, this is fucking vile stuff

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
I don't love the Toxic cover that much, but the album is quite solid. I think Toxic is probably the worst track, or Pretty Green. Everything else is terrific.

Heh, not surprised Mark Ronson is despised around here. My two cents on this album:

- the songs that were bad to begin with (charlatans, kasabian, maximo park) still sound awful, just more like a polished turd.

- songs by Kaiser Chiefs, Zutons and Coldplay are actually an improvement on the originals imho. But I’m not into the original artists so maybe I’m a minority on this one. (Well, every version I’ve overheard of Valerie is the Amy Winehouse one from this album, so I might be otm with that one.)

- Radiohead and The Jam are obviously miles away from the originals but at least they are risky, interesting choices to do in this style. No need to listen to them ever again but at least they are not stripped down, acoustic bullshit covers.

Not knowing much about this dude and being mostly hostile to what I have heard (though the Ghostface track he did is great), I was very surprised that he would be the one contemporary artist they chose as a talking head on the BBC Yacht Rock thing.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 12:37 (six years ago)

He's funnier than I expected in this.
