What kind of a piece of shit is ILM if after 6 years it doesn't have a thread solely devoted to Tammy Wynette?

of course, maybe the search function is screwed, and therefore i'm the piece of poo. anyway, kinda obviously classic, excuse my rantings.

a piece of shit with better things to do

james brooks (j_brooks), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

well thanks for rectifying the situation. this thread is quite the tribute to tammy. and what you have to say about her is eye-opening and a revelation.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

THANK YOU SCOTT FOR HEARTFELT RESPONSE TO A VERY SERIOUS THREAD. i was just surprised is all. i will work now on words that open eyes and reveal.

We're waiting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe she isn't worth a thread. It's not like she's up there with Loretta. In fact, she ain't even close.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer Tanya Tucker. Her greatest hits is fucking awesome.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

You boys need some schoolin because Tammy Wynette is "the first lady of the country song" in the words of her ex. She's got her own thing, not as rootsy as Loretta or Dolly but perfectly suited to Billy Sherrill's countrypolitan productions. Start w/the ten duets on George [Jones]& Tammy Greatest Hits proceed to Tammy's first couple best-of LPs or a CD compilation and you'll hear why she's considered one of the all-time greats.

Sure, we can use this thread to discuss her music and her assumingly out-of-this-world upbringing full of heartache and opposition, or we could find something better to do. I've been doing the latter for the past 23 years and it still seems like the better choice.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Tammy. Betcha she'd get the same default legendary status every other old Country singer enjoys if she wasn't known primairly for "Stand By Your Man".

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes ILM really is shitty. dare to malign a no-talent tween idol or indie-rock solipsist around here and you get flames up yr ass but you geniuses can't even scrounge up a little curiosity -- let alone respect -- for one of the greatest country singers ever.

lovebug 2.0 (lovebug starski), Thursday, 18 January 2007 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, I was engaging you! That comment wasn't anti-Tammy, just noting how one song can overshadow a career.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 January 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Classic, not only for her singing and her persona and for obvious monster hits like "Stand By Your Man" and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," but also for having had two musician husbands with the same first name thereby having to refer to then-current husband by last name to distinguish from prior husband.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I love Tammy! "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad" is one of my favorite songs, ever.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

I really dig her exaggerated yokel-style enunciation. "Gyu-ive Hyu-im tu-oo, u-arms, tuoo cluh-ing tuh-oo"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, she gave Jones a run for his money with that stuff.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Stand By Your Man" is one of the very greatest country singles. Sherrill's arrangement is thrilling and the politics aren't as damning as some--myself included--might argue.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

lovebug

i think more the problem is when people start these fucking self-righteous threads like "WHY THE FUCK DON'T YOU PEOPLE TALK ABOUT XXXXX" and then that's all they say, they don't even have anything to say abt. the artist themselves, except for "I like Tammy Wynette" then why not just say that and spare us the sanctimony.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

i'm glad people are discussing her now, even though i didn't intend for this to be a C or D type thread (lighten up Scott, i'm still a little floored at your grumpiness but i guess i just bug ya or something) My obvious (i thought) mock rage in the thread title was just me scratching my head over how someone so essential mostly only gets mentioned on ilm in KLF threads. it was interesting to me to speculate why that might be, certainly nu-country gets a lot of coverage here, at least on the rolling thread. is countrypolitan so passe? . then i thought maybe she's so undeniable that there's not much to say, but some of the naysaying from the kids convinces me she does need defending. so carry on!

xpost you too? i wasn't serious dude!!!

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

(sorry if i misread)

but yeah tammy's cool. i like her stuff w/george. i don't know enuff of her stuff.

and yep classic country isn't discussed enough.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of the Nashville Sound and the whole Countrypolitan thing, which I agree, doesn't get nearly enough credit as it should.

I got "Loretta Lynn Writes'em and Sings'em" for xmas and it's by far, one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

classic country isn't discussed enough.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

This story was all over the local news channels (in Nashville).

But, they have Little Jimmy Dickens on practically every week!

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

I guess the Bluebird of Happiness never deserted him!

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

or flew up his nose!

From a blog in the Nashville Scene:

http://www.nashvillescene.com/blog/nashvillecream/archives/00000431.shtml#comments

This guy killed me!

I'm a 69 yr. old country musician, and had been watching that program for years until the bubble-gum rock and rollers took over. They play good music but I can promise you "it ain;t country,so us old country fans are obsolite ,I guess. All I know is Grand ole opry has lost alot of faithful fans including myself----- Thanks for the memories

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

sorry I threw a fit up there but hey it worked!

search: "Cowboys Don't Shoot Straight (Like They Used To) from 1981.

lovebug 2.0 (lovebug starski), Friday, 19 January 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
"(We're Not) The Jet Set" on a Superbowl commercial!

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hopefully it's a car commercial -- "we're the old Chevrolet set" -- and not an ad for toilet-bowl cleaner or Lipitor.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yup, that's it. It was a Chevy commercial with average people singing songs that mentioned Chevrolet and its makes and models, with "(We're Not) The Jet Set" occupying the place of honor.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I guess "Chevy Van" would've been inappropriate.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think that was in there too.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

no, maybe it wasn't in there

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

Even Stand By Your Man is a good song if you stop taking it as a manifesto and just take it as the feelings and thoughts of a single character, as most songs are.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 25 October 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)

?! no excuses necessary, that song is great. The "after all he's just a man" line is the clincher.
