The overall Rob Crow thread

As there doesn't seem to be one on ILM specifically. And since I'm listening to the new solo album, which is nice though on first blush is not much different from the Pinback I've heard (and loved, so no real complaints).

I'm curious about this one. His last solo album was mainly full of genre exercises. But now that he's got Goblin Cock, Optiganally Yours, Physics, The Ladies, Thingy, and Pinback, maybe he can focus on one particlar style.

I'm hearing bits of early eighties XTC in it, but above all it really sounds like Rob just being Rob, as I've heard him most often. Low key vocals and guitars, crisp drums, etc.

The one with the cat on the cover was great, but I lost it and I haven't been able to find it anywhere! This was in like 2004. And now the new one is out and I'm way into it. Yes, it is mostly Pinback sounding, but more stripped down.

His last solo album was mainly full of genre exercises.

It had a few joke-ish genre exercises, but other than that it was full of the type of music you'd expect from Rob Crow (but more in the 90s Thingy/Heavy Vegetable way). Lots of short songs, maybe the best Crow-related album I've heard. The new solo album is OK, a little more conventional/Pinback than I hoped. "Taste" is great.

The bulk of the side-projects lately have been bad, really half-assed... Anything with Zach Hill particularly so.

one year passes...

so is Thingy coming out with a new album? I thought I read something somewhere.

Rob Crow hasn't had anything good since Pinback - Summer in Abaddon...
But I haven't really given him much of a chance because picking out good songs out of album for of 'same old crap' can be time consuming.
I guess I haven't really given Goblin Cock much of a chance either. But I think it's damn cool that they cover The Porpoise Song (monkees) on their myspace

* full of the

Is Goblin Cock worth seeing live? They are coming to town soon. I saw pinback live.. it wasn't as rocking as I would have liked but they played Grey Machine and some other good stuff.

did it leak? all i've heard are a few tracks they upload on soundcloud for 2 days and then they get removed

billstevejim, Friday, 30 September 2011 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

Am reviewing it for the AMG -- on the one hand, 'just' another Rob Crow album but on the other, that means it's really, really wonderful!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 September 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

His last 2 were both dope AND fresh.. i'm excited to hear more

Just heard Thingy - to the Innocent and was somewhat pleased / surprised to find it sounds exactly like a Rob solo record.

Then you music proceed to the other Thingy full length, which is even better and back through the Heavy Vegetable albums.

People seem to forget he was in Boilermaker for the first couple of EPs too. Not really reflective of the "Rob Crow sound", but still really great.

when i was in high school i wrote a big article for the school paper on heavy vegetable. i interviewed rob in his apartment in encinitas. he showed me jackie chan movies and told me to listen to tortoise (this was 1994).

That's cool! I did not know Crow knows his Chan. If you used any photo captions in your article, I hope you were more careful than the Reader editors are.

it's a short list of ppl who could make an "acoustic covers album" sound this cool and worthy of one's time imo
