I dunno, the Electroclash article just describes, in a fairly factual and accurate way, the key players in the New York downtown scene of the past two or three years. I covered a lot of this on an audio documentary I did in 2000 called 'Fakeways: Manhattan Folk'. I was there at Gavin Brown's Gallery to see the early Fischerspooner performances, I was at As4 parties when ARE Weapons played, I even saw the legendary show when one of the girls in the band set herself on fire and had to stay in hospital for three weeks.

I don't like Larry T's compilation, which gives the scene its name. I don't like how people are narrowing things down to a couple of star players because of their big record deals and their filmstar dates. The most interesting people in 'Electroclash' (which I call the 'Superbeings' movement, and was planning to make a compilation of last year) are talented marginals: Mono Trona, Phiiliip, Ford Wright, Centuries...

But in general I don't have a problem with a scene like this being covered. Better late than never. Are they market researchers? I look forward to Electroclash-branded tea cosies, then.

A. Alex Trebek crossover in the cards.

Q. What was the consequence of the Perry Ellis grunge collection?

It's articles like this one (and the similarly air-headed puff piece in the Voice last week) that prove to me that something actually could be going on... well, that and the zillions of new acts that have sprung up like unkillable mushrooms in the past few months. Has anyone heard of "Rebecca and the Plastics" or something to that effect? she's playing soon. I think the concept is that her entire band is pre-recorded - but not just the audio, the video too! the latter is projected on a screen behind her. She "interacts" with her band etc throughout the show. It sounds fun!

PS: I offered Fischerspooner a Cherry Red recording contract two years ago. Wouldn't that have been funny? 'The revolution is on Cherry Red!'

Tracy, Tracer. Tracy & the Plastics. Get your glitch on.

from the website:

"THE KEYBOARD AS GRAVITRON DRAWS THE SHAPE OF THE ARCADE GIRL + THE KICK OF THE DRUMS FILLS HER IN WITH GUTSY VHS. OKAY, THIS IS EXCITING BECAUSE IT'S REALLY HAPPENING!"

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wouldn't it be exciting if it wasn't really happening too?
