is it just me, or does that Midnight Special DVD set look kinda cool?

now, I'm normally not the type to go in for those Time-Life music collections (though I wouldn't have kicked AM Gold and Freedom Rock out of bed for eating crackers), and maybe it's the work of my sleep-deprived state...you see, I keep a TV next to the bed, and when I awake in the wee earlies, and can't fall right back to sleep, I click the thing on, and more often than not I see the infomercial for the Midnight Special DVD set...and it looks good enough to buy!...the full range of 70's era musicians, from Bowie to Ike & Tina, Nugent to Rundgren, A Taste Of Honey to Heart...and beyond...all documented live, when they were actually good...my memory of the Midnight Special was that it was the inferior mainstream alternative to Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, but looking at the clips on this ad, I might wanna rethink that...

ILM, am I losing it?

henry s, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

No, it looked pretty cool to me as well. And IIRC the price wasn't all that bad either?

Still waiting for a DVD of the "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" with Rocket-era Ramones and the Ohio Players.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 16 April 2007 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

ok so my pops was on an episode of this. he was the singer for the spencer davis group after stevie left to do traffic and spencer got a bunch of la dudes to be his band. the guitar player is chris pinnick from shicago (who my pops still plays with!) and the bass player was lee from iron butterfly and the rest of the doods were from the grass roots or whatever! anyway my pops is the lead singer and they do gimme some lovin and im a man the other bands were the guess who and montrose. ive been looking for a copy FOREVER so if anyone gets this and can tell me if thats on it or not thank you

chaki, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm waiting for the ABC In Concert series to hit DVD. That seemed to be the best one of the three.

nickn, Monday, 16 April 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, this defintately looks cool--WHat's wrong with the Time-Life Music collections btw?

Tinky-Winky, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

nine months pass...

I just saw part of an infomercial for this...not Time-Life, but it definitely looks cool. But after S&H the cost will probably be $28 per disc, a little rich for me.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 19 January 2008 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with shows like MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is that they're only as good as whoever the guest was. And those DVD's look cool enough to RENT, but as far as BUYING?

Rev. Hoodoo, Sunday, 20 January 2008 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure my friend received at least one of these as a gift. I'll try to report back tomorrow, when I find out which one(s).

dell, Sunday, 20 January 2008 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

Seem to recall that Libby Titus and Phoebe Snow were on all the time. Perhaps there was a rule that there had to be one or the other on every episode. Perhaps the scheduling was synchronized with the alternation of McCloud and McMillan And Wife on the NBC mysteries series.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

So during Columbo nights it was...Janis Ian?

dell, Sunday, 20 January 2008 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

Haha. Exactly.

After looking at the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL episode guide on TV.Com, seems like the Bee Gees (pre-disco) and Waylon Jennings were on that show a thousand times apiece...

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Hm. Libby Titus seems to have been on only one time. Maybe I'm confounding and her home base was actually Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Unfortunately the episode guide for that show is rather incomplete.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

...and when it comes to late night rock TV, everybody seems to have forgotten IN CONCERT (1972-75), which doesn't show up on TV.Com at all. Unlike the bright lights of THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, which may as well have been THE TONIGHT SHOW with rock bands, IN CONCERT was on ABC and was usually filmed right in the middle of a darkly-lit sweat-stained auditorium, featuring all the big acts of the time performing full sets instead of two songs here and there. However, the corporate brass must have interfered something terrible, because the last few episodes were all-country.

IN CONCERT, by the way, is not to be confused with (a) the updated version from the nineties, or (b) DON KIRSHNER'S ROCK CONCERT, which seemed rather dull in comparison.

I'm now seeing new infomercials, with different clips of the same artists...and it still looks great!

I've got ripped copies of some of these but a lot is missing (would love to have all the Bee Gees clips...)

always cracks me up that Christopher Cross plays a double guitar in a football jersey... nothin says "I'm going sailing!" like a double guitar and a football jersey

Feel like anecdotally I am observing some extra funky drum breaks and added handed percussion on a few of these. Here on Linda Ronstadt singing "You're No Good," for example.

Oh wow. Apparently that is Andrew Gold on guitar and Skunk Baxter on congas.

And then the same band went on New York's Rocking Eve later that evening?

Mesmerized by these performances. Maybe I should post to a Linda Ronstadt thread though.

i'm glad i was around for stuff like this. i was young but all this music on t.v. kinda washed over me. and it was everywhere. variety shows. late night shows. even the daytime shows like mike douglas and dinah and merv had tons of music. i miss that.

At what point did the Midnight Special stop putting up those big lit-up letters behind the bands? How cool would it be to see NED DOHENY in ten foot neon? Of course, my 13-year old self would have been all "take it back to AM, you England Dan and John Ford Poser!"
