myspace is fucking horrible for uploading audio to. i'm pretty sure they lower the bitrate to unlistenable levels.

bitrate schmitrate

I know, right?, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Last.fm is cool, if you're not looking for anything specific. I've found out about some pretty sweet groups I'd never have heard of otherwise via their "radio stations".

Unfortunately, if you're looking for particular artists/tracks, they're usually just 30 second samples. The radio stations play full tracks, though.

Well, if Flickr is where you put your own pics and Youtube is where you put your own videos, then Myspace is where you put your own music.

Youtube is actually good for audio...just listening, that is. Searching for mp3s via <a href="http://hypem.com/">Hype Machine</a> and elbo.ws can be effective, as is searching for 'song title' + mp3 in Google.

Thanks a lot Display Name, now we're going to have a zillion startups with names like "Tunr".

Many of my pals swear by dimeadozen but I think that one requires reciprocity, and everything on the site must be commercially unavailable.

ellaguru, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

I should also clarify that I want the site to host my own content.

check with your isp, we just discovered that ours allows us free server space for pretty much anything.

tradebit is like 4 bucks a month for a decent amount of space and unlimited pipeline

Myspace is:
- Terrible browsing
- Terrible sound (that, or most artists have whack equipment)
- Most spam since Hotmail
- Dead

Then again, I can't think of any good alternatives either.

Discogs should allow people to submit audio clips for tracks. The clip would be verified by a certain number of other Discogs users (5? 10?) listening to the clip and confirming it is accurate and verifying the quality.

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

also yes using Youtube just for audio clips is something people should probably do more. Just use Windows Movie Maker to stick a photo or whatever with the track and encode it to decent bitrate. People don't have to look while they listen.

youtube! i've listened to tons of stuff on there. I'd love someone to code up some kind of playlist maker for it, where you could load up a string of urls and have them play in sequence.

I actually saw some "Add to playlist" link the other day under a video but didn't investigate.. but you can!

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Youtube already has had a playlist function for a long time now.
