oh i see, this is this like some extreme radical anti-rockist PoV where special efx = dancing. ok.

i think actually his live concert dancing >>>>> his music videos, especially the stuff he did on the tour for "bad" and music awards shows for that era . he does more out of this world lock + pop type stuff and less random crotch gyration / crotch grab than in the videos.

the one thing about that dance sequence that always impressed me was how super-tight the choreography appeared, but maybe that's just down to only having 5-10 backup dancers at a time as opposed to what, 15-20 in "thriller" and "bad"??

I haven't actually seen the video (or any of his "Bad"/"Dangerous era vids, really) in a long time, so I think I need to spend some time fighting Youtube before I have any real opinion on this.

when you watch the youtube vids, check out some of the live compilation / montage videos that people have made of his performances. also be sure to check out when he was on OPRAH, there's a bit where he dances for like 30 seconds for oprah and it's just incredible. i dunno, maybe i'm just unusually interested in the technique of what he does but just the pure joy of watching him dance by himself without any crazy edits or backup dancers on rollerskates does it for me much more than the videos.

ironically i think i agree with you that "smooth criminal" is probably the best, maybe because it has long uninterrupted shots of him dancing and they're really creative with integrating charleston-type stuff into his normal moves.

but seriously, check the live videos from 86-93, they're incredible.

there's the extended version of "dirty diana" (i think) from moonwalker where he goes out on the street and dances by himself in the street to no music and then he smashes up a derelict car.

"the way you make me feel" had some pretty awesome dancing in it too -- it's the only time i can remember the narrative of one of his videos where dancing was done for pure joy and/or to impress a girl rather than some expression of defiance/anger? -- but was unfortunately marred by its "everyone hump the ground now" ending
