Zeno, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, did I miss the new one being out?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

mars audiac for me.
never understood why most of the critics choose "emperor ketchup" as the best one.

the real
competition is between "mars audiac" and "transient random"

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

"Serene Velocity" is a "singles" "anthology"

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

blame the official site if you want:
http://www.stereolab.co.uk/discography/list.php

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Sound-Dust is magical.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Stereolab Sampler" ?

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

"japanese limited edition promo - 300 Copies"

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Serene Velocity" is a "singles" "anthology"

Oh right, the Rhino comp.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

what did you choose,Ned?

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

Transient Random for me, thank you muchly.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

what did you choose,Ned?

I didn't. I don't vote in these things.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

It's a battle of the singles comps. Switched On all the way.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

"Refried Ecto" is the best comp.

Although "Oscillons" ah c'mon!

unXpost

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

compilations = cheating

Dots And Loops is my jam...

henry s, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I voted for "Emperor Tomato Ketchup", a narrow winner over "Mars Audiac Quintet", which I played so often I burnt myself out on.

I like most of the records listed above, I should pick up the ones I haven't got, really.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I fell off after Emperor Tomato Ketchup but love pretty much everything up to that. Peng is great, but the trinity of Transient Random/Mars Audiac Quintent/ETK pretty much defined my college existance. I'm going with Transient though.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh if we're having compilations, then Oscillons is the one. That made made like them instead of being pretty sure that I didn't.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Audiac for me too.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

(as with so many of my votes, for personal reasons)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey, they've released more albums I haven't heard than albums I have now. I haven't bothered with anything since Dots and Loops. Although some of those are comps I suppose.

Refried Ectoplasm is my fave but voting for a comp seems like cheating. So Mars Audiac Quintet I guess.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

I like cheating.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

Every time I vote for a singles / EPs compilation in one of these "best album" polls I expect to get a page that says "INCORRECT, that is not an album" and then makes me start over again.

I want to vote for Emperor as their best studio album, but hey, if Oscillons is on the list, it wins. I'm pretty fond of ABC Music as an alternate history, too.

nabisco, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Mars Audiac Quintet.
I also like Cobra..., which is not so popular, but it's a beautiful record.

zeus, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Godspeed you black EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP!

"Innn-cre-di-BULL things... are happening... in this world"

Just beating Peng!

DavidM, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

switched on

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

TRNBWA

Bill in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

one day I'm going to lead the charge for all the post-ETK stereolab records (except Dots & Loops, which I hate for the same reason people hate all the other ones)

Dominique, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Refried Ecto!

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

oh hell, this is too hard. i'm out.

AmyCamus, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

xxpost I'll help rep the newer stuff anytime (including Dots and Loops but excepting First of the Microbes obviously), the indie motorik schtick is coo but the bossa-cyber-chicago-sheen is some gorgeous nother level shit (culminating in Cobra, far and away my pick) and I'm upset that they've half-stepped away from it to please the philistines who stopped listening anyway as this thread bears out. Mars Audiac is prbably my favorite of the first wave stuff.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

i want to get a cat and name it jenny ondioline.

ned how do you feel about dots and loops?

mookieproof, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

i have lots of post-ETK love but it's switched on for me

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

"aluminum tunes" is my favorite comp, and the title I would take if I had to choose one title to keep, but I voted "mars audiac quintet," since the thread said 'album'

nicky lo-fi, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I went for Peng, just edging it over Emperor Tomato Ketchup.

emil.y, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Me, too. Peng is still the most mysterious one, and its flow is unequaled.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Mars Audiac Quintet, but barely nudging out Transient.

sleeve, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Hard to say which way this one will go. I actually voted for ABC Music. I hadn't listened to the Lab for a while before that came out & it totally got me excited about them again.

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Here's my...

Stereolab albums ranked with essential tracks:

Peng!: "Super Falling Star," "Orgiastic," "Peng 33," "K-Stars," "The Seeming and the Meaning," "Surrealchemist"

Emperor Tomato Ketchup: "Metronomic Underground," "Cybele's Reverie," "Percolator," "Les Yper-Sound," "OLV 26," "The Noise Of Carpet," "Emperor Tomato Ketchup"

Mars Audiac Quintet: "Wow and Flutter," "Ping Pong," "International Colouring Contest"

Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements: "Jenny Ondioline," "Our Trinitone Blast"

Dots and Loops: "Brakhage"

Margerine Eclipse: "Sudden Stars," "Feel And Triple," "Dear Marge"

Sound-Dust: "Captain Easychord"

Refried Ectoplasm: Switched On, Vol. 2 (rarities compilation): "French Disko," "Lo Boob Oscillator"

ABC Music - The Radio 1 Sessions: "Super-Electric" (also available on Too Pure: The Peel Sessions [Strange Fruit])

Instant O in the Universe EP: "Mass Riff"

Switched on Stereolab: "Changer"

Fab Four Suture: "Excursions Into 'Oh, A-Oh'"

The First of the Microbe Hunters: "Outer Bongolia"

Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night: "Fuses"

Oscillons from the Anti-Sun (boxed set of previously released singles and promos): "Fluerescences," "Les Yper Yper Sound"

I'd recommend not buying:

Space Age Batchelor Pad Music (except they keep playing "We Are Not Adult-Oriented" live for some reason, maybe because it's a great title)

Aluminum Tunes: Switched On, Vol. 3

Serene Velocity: A Stereolab Anthology

Haven't heard:

Music for the Amorphous Body Study Center

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2007 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Mars Audiac for mine, but 'Super-Electric' (remains) their best song.

SeekAltRoute, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pete: doesn't MFTABSC make up the first quarter of Aluminum Tunes? So, if you've heard the latter...

My current favourite Stereolab track is "Hallucinex". I never really gave Fab Four Suture much of a chance and I'm not inclined to go back to it.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 May 2007 06:25 (nineteen years ago)

Transient RNBWA is not only my favourite Stereolab, but it's up there in my top 5 records ever.

Sound-Dust and ETC shortly behing over Peng! and then MAQ.

I used to be mildly obsessive about them, then Dots & Loops fell me out of love with them...Sound-Dust was wonderful, total restorer of the faith.

Mister Craig, Thursday, 17 May 2007 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

Fab Four Suture was issued as individual singles.

I got them, I aint played 'em. I should really.

I played three of them online and thought it was a return to form.

Seeing as how I play music mostly in the car, I either need to get a 'slot-in 7" single player' or just buy the goddam CD.

Mark G, Thursday, 17 May 2007 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't. I don't vote in these things.

-- Ned Raggett, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 10:56 AM (Yesterday)

;__;

Eisbaer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite song right now is 'LAISSEZ FAIRE' from the BBC comp.

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 17 May 2007 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

Pete: doesn't MFTABSC make up the first quarter of Aluminum Tunes? So, if you've heard the latter...

Oops, then I've heard it--and don't remember it. I tried to like something on that compilation for a while.

I should add that I'll pretty much buy anything Stereolab puts out, and their live show remains great.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

i voted for music for the amorphous body study center, even though i know its all on aluminum tunes

696, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

results

Zeno, Sunday, 20 May 2007 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

eh...i voted for aluminum tunes.

funny farm, Sunday, 20 May 2007 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...

I'm very sorry I missed this thread entirely. I had been thinking just now that it would be interesting to have a Stereolab album poll and lo and behold, there it was!

I'm kindof a stick in the mud about Dots & Loops. But I think it would be a good idea if I heard Transient Random Noise Bursts or Mars Audiac Quintet, those are the two I don't believe I've heard before that would be of interest.

Bimble, Sunday, 2 September 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

transient has good material, i just don't like how it sounds, I don't know the techy way to describe it but it sounds muffled. 'Crest' is one of my very favorite songs though, I'd love to hear a cleaner recording of it. Mars Audiac is great.

tremendoid, Sunday, 2 September 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

I love Peng! 33 and would dearly like to put it on all my mix CDs (not that I make many) but the album version is really quiet and somehow manages to be tinny and muffled at once, and the session version on ABC music is much better EQ-wise but goes a bit out of tune, so I guess it is not to be.

I am always kind of glad faced with the "best Stereolab album" question when people don't count compilations, because then I can say right away "Mars Audiac Quintet is my favourite proper album, but I probably like Refried Ectoplasm even better, and the first Switched On is awesome too, and...". For this one I'd have had to decide. Except I missed it anyway.

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 2 September 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think it would be a good idea if I heard Transient Random Noise Bursts or Mars Audiac Quintet

those are their best albums, probably, so yeah, you should

akm, Sunday, 2 September 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe cobra got more votes than margerine eclipse.

akm, Sunday, 2 September 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe Aluminum Tunes is so underrated.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 2 September 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

oh wow this poll is so completely upside-down and rong. ETK fair enough, but 6 for Cobra & Phases?? um okay.

Dots & Loops followed by Margerine Eclipse, easily.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 07:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the six votes for Cobra are crazy and Dots n' Loops should be much lower. I think I'd choose Sound-Dust

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

Dots n' Loops should be much lower.

^ ban

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Urgh, I put it on recently and the production really made me nauseous (and I'm a Tortoise fan)

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sound-Dust is underrated a lot I think. It's >>> than Dots and Loops, which was the point I stopped being a Stereolab completist..

Mister Craig, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

otm

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

dots & loops fite

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

space age batchelor pad music 0

this makes me sad ^^

i love that one! might have voted for it had i seen the poll.

stephen, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

yes! ^ that thing!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Dots & Loops got me into Stereolab, so I dunno, maybe there're early fans and late fans.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

'maybe'. don't blame me, i voted for cobra.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

actually i must say despite my affection for space age batchelor pad that i would've voted transient room etc.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

ftw

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Today is one of those days when ABC Music sounds like the best collection they ever put together-- maybe the best collection anyone every put together!

Mark Rich@rdson, Saturday, 2 August 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

every? can't believe sound dust got five and margerine eclipse nothing. "dear marge" is one of their best closing tracks

kamerad, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

er, mean ever

Mark Rich@rdson, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Margerine Eclipse is amazing. A proper confluence of everything the band had done to that point.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)
