You're kidding, right? Top 3 are absolutely genius, but nothing beats classic Motown.

JN$OT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 06:58 (nineteen years ago)

In pop-culture terms, I don't see anything beating Motown. But I don't know shit about techno, much less anything after that.

hmmmmmm....what if I suggested CKLW???

peepee, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

The way the question is phrased, there is no choice but Motown. If it had been the more vague "Which do you prefer," then maybe... I mean at least half of today's chart hits stem directly from Motown's cultural contribution.

MC, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

motown = the fountain

m coleman, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

where's the Coop?

henry s, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, okay...I guess I misunderstood the question. I was taking "contribution to popular culture" to mean something encompassing more than just the MUSIC itself, in which case Motown is pretty much unsurpassed. (For example, you could argue that the Sugar Hill and Death Row labels might never have existed, had Berry Gordy not demonstrated that a black-owned independent record label could be a huge success.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Is Vernors a detroit thing? I used to drink it every year on my trips to visit the grandparents in Cleveland.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I ticked techno, but now I'm not so sure because motown is a pretty big one as well.

henry s, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Ahem, given that I now understand the question better than I thought I did, I choose to retract (or renounce) my vote for Motown. And decline to vote at all, since I refuse to choose between the first three.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I would argue P-Funk is a Jersey thing (Clinton, Worrel, Hazel from Plainfield) rather than Detroit. So they're DQ'd.
