i think it's funny that the production is (predictably) such a left-turn for him, but the chorus is so second-rate college dropout.
where is he going with this?
this can't actually be the single, right?

W4LTER, Saturday, 29 September 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

on REPEAT 245826x in the car past week

rizzx, Saturday, 29 September 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

One of my least favorite songs. I wasn't much of a fan of Hova's "Moment of Clarity" either.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah this song is still hot garbage.

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 29 September 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

insane
only kanye single to please meh

and what, Saturday, 29 September 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

now "The Good Life" is awesome.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

this song is great when kanye is not on it

deej, Saturday, 29 September 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

^^^this

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 29 September 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Should have given the beat to Roots Manuva.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 29 September 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

nah man, i love kanye's voice on this one. ooh they so sensitive

that's pimpin

ahaha

rizzx, Saturday, 29 September 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Champion" is better :P

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 29 September 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

I like it! I'm cool with the first two thirds of the album, then the "papparazzi/nazi" rhyme kills the last bit for me (though I still like "Everything I Am").

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

If they'd replaced "Homecoming" and "Big Brother" with "Bittersweet" and "Good Night" respectively the album would be a lot better.

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

way way better than "Stronger"

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with deej.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

never should have been a single, probably the 4th or 5th best song on the album.

it's a solid B/B+ for me.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

"this song is great when kanye is not on it"

This is basically true for every Kanye song.

milo z, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

I accept "Big Brother" cuz its sentimentality and narcissism, appalling though they are, make it a perfect Kanye snapshot. Like Bowie's "Time."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

that is fucking retarded

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

why would you say one second you like the songs when kanye's not on it and then approve of a sluggish livejournal reading as being a "perfect snapshot" of the guy. do you like it in theory or something?

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

in theory communism works.

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

He gives a better performance on "Big Brother" -- the tone goes back and forth. "Can't Tell Me Nothing" is too one-dimensional.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I'd rather hear an artist making an ass of himself trying to explain his conflicted feelings about someone/thing than being unyieldingly self-righteous.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the tone goes back and forth from suck to blow.

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

if you don't like unyielding self-righteousness what are you doing listening to kanye west

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

for real.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

alfred's right about it being a "perfect snapshot." i like the song tho.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

cuz on his best stuff he's funny and self-righteous and conflicted about being self-righteous.

(xpost to anthony)

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I love how the "Kid Charlemagne" sample on "Champion" comes in after every verse, alternately mocking and affirming every boast. On most good Kanye the music atones for or complements the verbal hysteria. Something about the queasiness of "Big Brother" makes it more compelling to me than "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

haha -- "Big Brother" could be titled "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Pete Wentz's livejournal is queasy too

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

almost kisses Jay-z's ass as much too

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's fascinating that expensive chart-aimed male hip-hop almost always reserves the amount of emotion Kanye expends on Jay-Z for songs about mamas or baby mamas. This kind of conflicted guy-on-guy thing is unusual.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

enjoy yr slash
