the only sad songs that really work for me are the ones where there is a tension between the guy's bad-boy persona and the candid lyrics. Pantera's "Hollow" works, but better yet is
9. Limp Bizkit - "Behind Blue Eyes"
i don't like the guy in general but this song opens up my lachrymal canals like no other.

24. "Love's Gonna Get'cha" - Boogie Down Productions (seriously)
"Katy Song" by RHP is better yet (there have been other threads where this has been discussed).

― Drooone, Monday, 21 May 2007 03:19 (nineteen years ago)
"Katy Song" doesn't seem as masculine in its emotiveness as "Michael." I mean Michael is all about dude missing his childhood best friend and their goofy heavy metal haircuts, "the daydreaming boy without a shirt on," etc. Katy Song is beautiful and heart-wrenching but doesn't seem stereotypically "manly" to me. Michael is a celebration of boyhood and being juvenile delinquents and nostalgia for simpler times.

72. Thin White Rope: "July"
There seem to be two factors in these:
a) the song is just so beautiful/aching that it makes me cry b) the song is one I happened to listen to repeatedly while going through the worst part of a breakup or breakdown, and hearing it still has an automisting effect.
the above is a b) case.
