"At Last" is one of those songs that's used in an obnoxiously large number of films/commercials/tv shows/weddings, so I've never really found myself listening to it during my free time. But after watching Inland Empire, it struck me how gorgeous the song actually is...Part of it's the swooning strings, but an even bigger part is Etta James. Her timing/phrasing is damn near perfect. So, does she have anything else worth checking out?

I tell you that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her ass whipped. The great Beyonce.
Now like I said, she ain't mine. I can't stand Beyonce! She had no business up there singing. Singing on a big ole, big ole presidential day and going be singing my song that I've been singing forever

I love how Etta always just says what she thinks. I remember when the late sleazebag campaign advisor Lee Atwater tried to get her to play a special old-school inaugural event for the first Bush (cuz Atwater had become a fan of soul as a Southern college fratboy) and she said, "No, I'm not gonna be Atwater's porch-ni**a."

After Houston's cover of the song became a hit, the tabloid press began reporting on a 'feud' between the two performers, stemming from Parton's allegedly reneging on an agreement that she would not perform the song for a number of months while Houston's version was on the charts, so as not to compete with the more recent cover. However, both Houston and Parton have dispelled any rumours, speaking glowingly of one another in interviews [2] [3], Houston praising Parton for writing a beautiful song, and Parton thanking Houston for bringing her song to a wider audience, and in the process making her a great deal of money in royalties. Dolly Parton also gave a live interview, confirming this.

Love Esther Phillips' version of "All The Way Down," and the liner notes mentioned it was a tribute to her old friend Etta James who was in the middle of a similar hard-hitting soul/funk resurgence in the 70s. James did the song on her self-titled 1973 album on Chess. Reissued by Hip-O Select, totally a must for Etta fans. Come A Little Closer (1974) is nearly as great.

Ailing Etta James, 72, "suffers from dementia, leukemia, kidney problems and other ailments." Superior Court Judge Thomas Cahraman ordered the independent evaluation and froze Etta's accounts after Dr. Elaine James ordered $60,000 last month for medical care reasons and then an additional $30,000 was requested this month.

But I think jaymc pulls this on like every third RIP thread, his baffled confusion as to why people might get rubbed the wrong way by disrespectful comments soon after a death.
I'm pretty sure this is only the third (maybe fourth) time I've weighed in on the subject, and once was in a thread expressly dedicated to the debate.
It's not that I don't understand the desire to discuss someone's death in purely respectful terms, I guess I just bristle at the thread policing that occurs as a result.
In this case, it didn't even seem like Dr. M's comment was disrespectful to Etta James -- in fact, it was laudatory! But because it was about politics, it was suddenly unwelcome. That didn't sit right with me. If he had said "Thank God she's dead," I'd have much less of an issue with your complaint.
Although it probably doesn't make a difference to you, I'll also remind you that I rarely talk ill of the recently deceased myself, but I value having a place where I can read a multiplicity of opinion. That said, if all you're asking for is "a couple of hours" before the discussion can widen, then that seems more or less reasonable to me.
Let's not make this personal, Jon. I like you as a poster, and I hope we have an opportunity to hang out IRL sometime.

Oh jaymc, I didn't notice your response from this weekend until just now. I definitely feel bad for going at you like that, I think I was just channeling my frustration with other RIP threads at you. I guess I just have a different expectation of how people handle these types of threads, which is something I just need to come to terms with because, lol internet isn't going to change. I do understand where you are coming from and, in general, I'm not really interested in stifling discussion - I just don't think within hours of someone like Etta James passing away is the time for someone to get in a (seemingly) unrelated political dig. I did see how Morbius' comment was actually sort of in context wrt the rest of this thread, but given his recent track record for throwing out digs at Obama whenever given half a chance I thought it was nagl as far as timing.
Anyway, I apologize if it turned into any sort of personal thing, I think you and I just have a sort of basic disagreement of how RIP threads in general are viewed. Isn't a bad thing really, we just come from a different direction on those. Hopefully we can put this behind us.
