Anything new out there in the same vein as Shout at the Devil & Appetite for Destruction?

I’m surprised so-called music hipsters haven’t grabbed on to trying to remake metal albums like this yet?
Or have they?

If so please point me in the right direction.

Nope- not what I'm looking for.

Scurvy is for pirates.

how about scarlet fever and typhoid?

Emily Bjurnhjam, Monday, 21 May 2007 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Scurvy is for pirates.

And at least one Minnesotan I know.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 May 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

The indie kids are still tackling 70s metal right now (The Sword, Witch, Black Mountain, etc.). They'll get there eventually.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 21 May 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

how bout that latest Buckcherry? The one with 'Crazy Bitch' (. That sounded very 80's metal to me(i am not joking).

chaki, Monday, 21 May 2007 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think Jeff is correct about this. I think the indie take on this kind of party metal is going to be obnoxiously super-ironic when it arrives, though, and nothing like the real swagger.

moley, Monday, 21 May 2007 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

buckcherry are real hollywood cokeheads.

LA GUNS!

I eat cannibals, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

the latest RTX album, sorta

latebloomer, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

obnoxiously super-ironic when it arrives, though, and nothing like the real swagger.

totally agree as well

lucypickle, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the indie take on 70s metal is nowhere near as good as the original, either, mostly because of the horrible vocals they seem to love (see the Retro-Rock Itch thread). There are bands that have that 80s hair metal swagger right now, but they aren't hipster bands.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Kelly Clarkson

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

That Absolute Steel record is great, but still (way) too ironic and tongue-in-cheek.

The Kelly Clarkson album is indeed an awesome rock record, but lacks that sense of bravado that we're searching for here. Also, almost no guitar solos.

The Donnas' Spend the Night is the last great sincere, unironic, asskicking rock album I've heard, although it's a little more AC/DC than GNR.

This trend of bands only unleashing arena rock if they have the shelter of irony is very annoying. Electric Six is a great example: they can kick ass with the best of them, and have righteous guitar solos, but everything has to be humorous and winking.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

no mention of the Darkness yet?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

There are a lot of Finnish bands that have that 80s sleaze rock edge, but they're fairly gothy. Lullacry and the 69 Eyes have the 80s LA sound without any irony, while Lordi has the 80s arena stuff with a sense of humor.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Vains of Jenna come even closer:

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

"no mention of the Darkness yet?"

again, way too ironic.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

well I know, but people were bemoaning the "eventual" indie kid ironic take on 80s metal and my point in bringing up the Darkness was, uh, it already happened a few years ago (AWK too, but he's kinda a different, more arguable example)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

69 Eyes reminded me of the Cult more than anything else

zaxxon25, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

the "types" who would have been in glam metal bands in the 1980s are all in emo bands now.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Having met the man, I'm fairly sure that there's no irony in Andrew WK anywhere. Anyway, I think The Darkness were more of a sendup of Queen than hair metal.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

darkness & donnas - not what i'm looking for

Vains of Jenna...I'll have to listen to them- they look the look

maybe i'm looking for an "authentic" take on this scene, for lack of better words

think early gnr and crue not full blown made-for-MTV poison hair metal sound.

lucypickle, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

I agree about the lack of irony in AWK, but other people (mostly his detractors) have argued quite the opposite

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

listen to buckcherry and brides of destruction you IDIOT.

chaki, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

fuck buckcherry

brides of destruction i will look into

lucypickle, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

you probably want to go ask the metal sludge board about this stuff

chaki, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

buckcherry gave a funny interview to this Christian rock magazine recently - the magazine was compelled to edit all the "Jesus is fuckin cool", "Jesus was the SHIT!" comments

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

I mean Buckcherry is the single answer to what you're looking for. I'm not kidding in the least. Their first two are great, especially. I liked 15 (I think...I can't really remember now) but I never really listened to it much.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

[ital]The Donnas' Spend the Night is the last great sincere, unironic, asskicking rock album I've heard[/i]

Try the latest Gore Gore Girls, Funny Money, Rich & Famous, and Sirens albums, for starters. Or maybe Damone, Leanne Kingwell, Atomic Bitch, Crucified Barbara, Rhino Bucket, and Big Dictator albums from last year. And yeah, some of those are more AC/DC (or Sonics maybe) than GnR, too. But this stuff really isn't that rare, actually. (Hell, there are country guys like Shooter Jennings who put plenty of '80s L.A. sleaze-rock in the sound too, nowadays.)
