Anything reggae by Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Snow & Sublime

El Gato Boxeador, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

There is no such thing as "having business playing a reggae song". Music is music, and outside factors are irrelevant.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

i agree

696, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

with someone

696, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like reggae.

I love it.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Outside factors *are* relevant but I think Geir is right when he says there's no such thing as "having business playing a reggae song".

If you want to say that there is, then what business did the inventors of reggae have using tehnology invented in other countries?

Which is just as silly and racist a question as the one at that started this thread.

Of course, that's just what I think... and I'm sure there are many arguments against my position!

vadx, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I dis... a... ppear!

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

New musics should not spread beyond their inventors.

Confounded, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

lol

vadx, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Only Jah qualified to judge.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

ideology aside, aren't reggae rhythms are notoriously tricky to play? and approximations often sound REALLY REALLLY REALLLLY LAME. like when natalie merchant goes native or whatever. frankly i never liked the police in reggatta mode for this reason. as good of a rock drummer as stew copeland is he always sounded stiff/rigid on the riddims mon.

m coleman, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

So is this guy's album wrong just because he's white, bald and female?

StanM, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Any album she's involved in is wrong

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

^is that the title of her next record?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Nina Hagen obviously wins this thread with the lovely "African Reggae", sung in german.

I'd give second place to 7nin Matsuri, a Hello! Project "shuffle group", ie: Morning Musume side project. (See youtube.)

Although to be honest, I don't think anyone has any business playing reggae, ever.

shieldforyoureyes, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

yeah... there's a lot of sexism on ILM (or at least people hating on bald Irish chicks), but it's apparently wrong to say Eric Clapton sounds like a total schmuck trying to do reggae. I don't think he even has any business playing blues. That's not racist. HE is an individual person who sucks.

Mr. Shirts, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

I heard a Stiff Little Fingers track the other day, a reggae thing.

It seemed quite important at the time, but in retrospect it seems pointless.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of like the Clapton version of I Shot The Sheriff.

Clearly "having no business playing reggae" has more to do with one's ability to play reggae well than with culture or race, and mcoleman is exactly right - reggae sounds really great when played right and really stupid when badly approximated. Funk is similar this way.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

311 and Sublime to thread.

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

Only black people should play reggae

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

an american blues song by a Britishes band

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Eh I think there are a lot of cases where people probably shouldn't record a lot of songs.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

serge gainsbourg got away with it.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree.

"Third World Girl" by Marvin Gaye was a pretty pathetic attempt at reggae. I dunno if Marvin Gaye "had no business" playing reggae or not, but his foray into the genre didn't bear much fruit.

novaheat, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Marley

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Loved that Sinead record. Loved it.

ellaguru, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Haha way to go, ILM, assuming "having no business playing reggae" MUST mean something to do with culture/race/origin!

(And we're talking about REGGAE, kinda the #1 genre for people doing embarrassing muggy "LOL we're playing reggae" dabbling!)

nabisco, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree.

Heh! Actually it's the voice of a contestant on "Celebrity Squares". Or, it was.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

yeah... there's a lot of sexism on ILM (or at least people hating on bald Irish chicks), but it's apparently wrong to say Eric Clapton sounds like a total schmuck trying to do reggae.

The problem about "I Shot The Sheriff" was it was recorded at such an early stage that it was seen as "risky" for a white mainstream star to play reggae. So he toned down the reggae rhythms considerably, leaving some kind of cross-in-between rock and reggae with more rock elements (not unlike what you find on Bob Marley's "Catch a Fire" album btw, which is also more rock than reggae in places)

Later, I think he did a great job adding a slight reggae beat to "Knocking On Heaven's Door" - his version is my favourite of all those cover versions that have been made of that song.

I don't think he even has any business playing blues.

Well, he loves it. And a lot of bluesfans say he does it in a great way. Me, I prefer stuff like "Tears In Heaven" and "Wonderful Tonight" rather than his blue moments though ;)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't he do "Swing low sweet chariot" Reggae as well?

I don't much like the blues, I'd actively avoid Eric Clapton blues, but I'd run away very fast from TIH and WT!

I'll give him points for that "mask" song though.

Also, I agree with Mr. Shirts.

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure this is xhuxk's favorite reggae record of all time.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

Is it wrong to do reggae in Finnish?

What? No "Reggae OK"? ;)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

Couldn't be arsed to look that up, but there's link to it on the Eurovision thread.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

There was that one Elton John song on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Elton John did reggae?!

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

I think everybody did in the 70s, at one time or another

Tom D., Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

'Break My Stride' is the bomb

blueski, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Jamaica Jerk Off" ...

Or there's always "Reggae for it now" Bill Lovelady

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

"Reggae like it used to be" Paul Nicholas

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Or there's that one about "Reggae being alive and well and living in Clapham"

srsly!

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Sid Owen 'Good Thing Goin'

blueski, Thursday, 24 May 2007 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

It's not wrong to do reggae in Finnish, but those examples aren't very good.

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

new order's "turn the heater on" was the first thing I thought of. but then they did a reggae thing on WtSC and it was alright

akm, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

So was "Turn the heater on" but hey!

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

glad no-one has mentioned you know who

blueski, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Dave Matthews Band?

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

Steely Dan - "Haitian Divorce"

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 24 May 2007 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

The Kinks, "Black Messiah." It's not so much that they had "no business" playing a reggae song; but for that reggae song to be racist is pretty fucked up, to say the least.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 24 May 2007 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck Like An Ape Man at least has a calypso beat

sexyDancer, Thursday, 24 May 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Jackson Browne - "Till I Go Down" from Lives In The Balance. Though it's sort of an enjoyable tune.

Gukbe, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

also, Girls Aloud are doing "Life Got Cold" on their current tour in a reggae version. It kind of wasn't horrible, actually.

Gukbe, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

OP: Anything reggae by Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Snow & Sublime

nabisco: Haha way to go, ILM, assuming "having no business playing reggae" MUST mean something to do with culture/race/origin!

What unites the artists he named other than their race? If you're going to say that they're not from JA, why not name a non-white artist that's not from there?

I guess you dudes would argue they're united by artistic incompetence or what have you. But Snow sold plenty of records in Jamaica. Sublime is nice with it. Eric Clapton, no comment.

Confounded, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

OMG that You Tube clip...someone bang the gong on that guy.

Bimble, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas' posts influenced me to find some Norwegian reggae on Youtube too. Not that these songs were both huge hits in Norway during the first half of the 80s, topping the charts and all:

Jannicke: Svake Mennesker:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKdIJSpu7Go
(This song topped the Norwegian singles chart for about one third of the entire 1981)

Lars: Livet er for kjipt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYQtP9wKVfM
(The video is not geniune, but rather a project at some school)
