Kinda surprising:

All Tomorrow's Parties takes great pleasure in announcing that the next curators for the Nightmare Before Christmas in December, 2007 will be Portishead. The influential Bristol three piece have confirmed to curate and play exclusively their first full set featuring new material for nearly 10 years at the event which is set to take place on December 7, 8 and 9 at Butlins Holiday Camp in Minehead.

Tickets to the event are on sale now at www.seetickets.com. The first confirmed bands they have chosen will be announced later this week.

They will probably pick The Heads to play. Awesome.

I so don't trust this news.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

blueski, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Portishead live at the Barras. Was amazingly good.

Yes but the Butlins is an oasis of comfort and joy.

Also Porlock just along the coast is a fine place for a day trip.

Ooh, tempted. Hmmm.

So I guess there'll be loads of stoner rock and stuff - doesn't Geoff Barrow run Invada or something? Not a problem for me, mind. I hear they have some pretty impressive stuff for the line up already. Also, is this not somewhat suspiciously timed to coincide with their forthcoming new material / resurgence? I'm sure it will still be good. I may even attend oh yes I might.

I had a blast again this past weekend, although I wish there were more hours in each day / less distractions to keep you up until all hours. It's a great vibe, especially when you see some of the artists enjoying themselves as much as you are (Phil Manley from Trans Am, that means you). I would definitely consider going down a day early next time.

(Actually, I was referring to the drummer Seb Thomson from Trans Am - sorry guitarist.)

Yup! That's why I said The Heads will play. Probably Gonga too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Me, I want to go! Me me me me me *waves at stet*

(Neil might too, he sort of grunted at me when I asked just now, which is quite good, and more positive than he sounded for the Thurston Moore one which he went to and enjoyed)

That first one is v Silver Apples.

Lolpez, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

colour me very excited.

apart from being a superb track and an interesting departure the first video illustrates the unmistakable sound of a gig these days: some guy talking shit incessantly throughout the entire set.

jed_, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yes I love it

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

second track is fucking great. love the stark electronics.

mark e, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

The only problem with the Portishead gig was that as nice as it was to hear the old stuff again, I would have liked to have heard more than 3 (I think) new ones - they were very good, can't wait for the album.

The GZA and Oneida were both very good, and I was very impressed with The Paranoid Critical Revolution and Oren Ambarchi both doing some very interesting things with guitar. Aphex was Aphex, good at moving between lots of styles, but too much glitch and not enough groove - he needed half an hour more techno and defintely drop the drill'n'bass black-hole at the end.

It was good to see the Silver Apples, but the best things about them are the drums and the electronics - I can't stand the vocals. Unfortuntately Simian was on his own using midi-drums so it was all a bit too mellow and we didn't stay for the whole set.

The Madlib set was OK but a bit flat because of it was the wrong night (Sunday) and wrong venue - should have been in a more intimate space, not that big tent which lost all the sound.

It was interesting wandering around listening to bits of the doomy metal bands playing, but I wouldn't want to watch a whole set. Wasn't at all keen about Om and Boris (or is that BORIS) though.

Very poor show on the DJ front in Crazy Horse bar, below mediocre, must do better.

Big duds to Portishead seemingly picking some Bristol bands just because they knew them, stand up Rosie Red Rash and Malakai.

Overall really enjoyed myself, but I think I'll leave it at least a year before going to another one, maybe more.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I'd say I was pretty au fait with Bristol bands in general and I've never heard of these Rosie Red Rash ladies

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

That's what you get with this curating business, bands invite who they know - and even then it's probably not easy to get all of them together, not like the summer festivals when everyone is on tour and in the right continent at the right time already.

StanM, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

malakai are getting the big push at the moment aren't they with references to Geoff B all over the press release.
however, i'm not impressed with the ep to be honest.
but bloke who sits near me loves it, so suspect they'll do very well in 2008.
