moved by the spirited luaka bop debate on the david byrne thread, i finally forced myself to plop down the $2.16 for this at my local used shop. i had been debating it for a while (who can argue with bubblegum pink / fluorescent blue / slime green album art??) and now it is in my hot hands.

what say ye?

i am particularly interested in steve shasta's take ...

I have a song by them called "Ching ching!" or something similar. It was very cute.

"jing jing"??

never heard of them. my luaka bop defense is centered around shuggy, tom ze, nouvelle vague and os mutantes.

hmm... okinawan music is great (shamisen)... one of my favorite restaurants plays this doom-metal take on shamisen that's really amazing, like melvins/earth de-tuned sludge in weird time signatures.

but i've never heard this guy. ysi the best track.

Jingjing, thats the one! I knew I had that kind of wrong wtf.

yeah it's like shamisen meets "roots rock", but it really ends up sounding like YMO doing bluegrass.

the back cover has a quote from ryuichi sakamoto: "i cry tears of joy when i hear this music"

^^ no joke

Search: "Subete No Hito No Kokoro Ni Hanna O" and "Haisai Ojisan" (although I think I actually prefer the Tarika Samy re-make of "Hana" that appeard on A World Out of Time). "Jing Jing" is pretty good too. I can't listen to the Shoukichi Kina straight through though. I am slightly more curious about traditional Okinawan music now that I've seen All About Lily Chou-Chou.
