From yesterday's London Lite, a review of The National's gig at The Astoria:

I DON'T like rock music and I don't like the scenesters/uncouth people who play it, but I was dragged to this show as it was my friend's birthday. Perhaps I liked these guys as they have a violin on stage which shows they have some kind of credibility. They had nice lyrics, kept in tune, and they aren't that shouty. They seemed like nice men as well. A pleasant evening.

Bless. I imagine this was a reader review rather than one by the paper's critic.

Obviously someone had an experience with a dildo or two after the show.

This part is actually excellent music writing since it perfectly captures the completely unnecessary, yet ultimately innocuous music of the National.

I like the way this seems to imply that the violin itself confers the credibility. No one needs to even play it; it can be just displayed on a chair, emanating cred.

All I know is every elementary school play I was in or saw featured an untouched piano hogging serious stage real estate, and there was no cred to be had anywhere. DESPITE my sterling performance as Penny #13 in a President's Day spectacular.

You can find reviews like this in most issues of Jazz Journal.

Ha, kind of like when I wound up having to see Old Crow Medicine Show - they had three "banjos" on stage at once that I'm pretty sure were actually banjitars (I was a bit far away) and they were just strumming them like guitars. "DINGADANG DONG, WE GOTS BANJOS"

Banjo Cred: totally underrated.

hahahah hurting. i know entirely too many people who enjoy old crow medicine show. not that they're really all that terrible; i just love the hippie mystique of pickin' n grinnin' and bein' all old timey and whatever. they love it. they grow beards and wear overalls and learn to play the banjo.
