modeselektor - happy birthday

i already talked about the great - and rather subtle - thom yorke collab on the very old modeselektor thread, but just about all of this is really good. the guys need to make an entire album with rappers (if not just with TTC) - the puppet mastaz track reminds me of the music coming out of clubs and cars in "children of men". the album is awash in tidal waves of bass, the answer to all of you sick of paddling in midrange.

was a little surprised to hear that "let your love grow" is exactly the same track they released with apparat as 'moderat' a while back, but it deserves to be heard by more, anyway.

some other repetive moments - "black block" and "sucker pin", but i can live with it.

this album is long, scattered and a little gauche in parts but when it's good it's really fucking good

"edgar" is this album's "ziq zaq". and i really like "ziq zaq".

I really need to hear this on a proper stereo 'cos tbh I found this pretty lacking in the tune dept and more than a bit dissapointing..

Great, great album. It's much more consistently interesting to listen to than Hello Mom! It's highs are higher (Edgar, title track, Let your Love Grow, The First Rebirthx100), although it's lows are lower too (Hyper Hyper, ugh). The collab with Thom Yorke is very nice, but it's a testament to the quality of Happy Birthday that it's probably not even in the top 5 or 6 songs on the album. I can't wait to pick it up!

Yes, v. good.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link

it's growing on me certainly but I don't really LOVE it...

don't think it's a patch on the first album, even though it's better to "listen to" (better produced basically) it's simply FAR too long, and needs more well, songs? more upbeat stuff anyway, too much of an electronica album and maybe not enough DANCE :( how much of this would be good for 12"s? I'd wager it's less than last time and can't help wishing they'd road tested it that way.

fandango, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

ok, growing on me properly now a few more listens in...

I do think it lacks for immediacy though, which is a bit of a letdown, I'd probably have trouble convincing others about it if that makes sense?

I love Hyper Hyper haha, such a goofy, funny but actually fond inversion of all that reverential nostalgin deep house worship something like "Teachers" (the Daft Punk track) tends to inspire... also this album needs a few (more) crude bangers like that and less middleground so it's welcome.

yeah, I am really liking this now, haven't really stopped listening to it yet, should sound even better when I get a real copy!

Think it was just the length thing, rightly picked up on from both pfork and stylus reviews. If I think of it as a double album it's beastiness sits more comfortably with me :)

aagh, tracklist very different on the CD! looks like it might work a bit better though.

also "The First Rebirth" actually a cover of sorts seeand hear

"Shipwreck" on the new one is so amazing.

I like both the Thom Yorke tracks!

I didn't really rate Monkeytown all that highly last year but after a comment on the Orbital thread re: "Modeselektor is the new Orbital" I went back to it and am really digging it now.

The joke is simple but I've played "Pretentious Friends" like four times in a row. "The pâté was fabulous!"

They even make hilarious promos. I forget which album but the promo was them supposedly being interviewed by a nerdish Long Island Internet DJ. Lots of fuzzy sounding Gallic mockery.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 April 2012 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

I'd also forgotten how much I like "Green Light Go"

It's very reminiscent of "Blue Mug" by Gus Gus

Yeah the was the Hello Mo promo, xp. It's annoying after about 5 seconds, though. And then I have to hit the skip button after every track ends to escape it. So glad to hear it's not on the "non-promo" version.

Late comer to these guys. Love Happy Birthday - what should I buy next, Hello Mom or Monkeytown?

after years of looking at this cd from afar, i found a copy today on cd for 50p.
and, now that the nights are drawing in, this is probably going to be a massive playlister.
despite the age, the production sounds massive.
