anyone use this much?
http://hypem.com/
you can search mp3 blogs, stream tracks that people have blogged about, set up rss feeds etc etc

zappi, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I use it all the time. Most recent example: after hearing several people last weekend talk about how much they liked the Chromeo album, I just searched for "chromeo" and was able to stream about a half-dozen tracks from the album, plus remixes. I bought the album the next day. In some cases, with really popular indie stuff, I've been able to construct an entire album just from downloading recent mp3s from 12 different blogs.

I've been using this lately:

http://www.criticalmetrics.com

I find the format a little better and it aggregates music press too

Hurting 2, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

otoh it seems more useful for the top stuff, less so for more obscure

Hurting 2, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Critical Metrics was started by ... Forksclovetofu's girlfriend, I think? I like it, too, but it runs extremely slow on my computer.

jaymc, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I've been addicted for over a year. See other Hype Machine thread.

I'm also responsible for it being popular at my school (sadly).

xpost Yeah, she didn't start it entirely herself, but she's part of the start-up, I believe. Anyway, I like it, and no forks didn't ask me to post about it.

Hurting 2, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i didn't know about it til january, when a friend of mine was like, 'just hypemachine it, dood.' i was like, 'wtf are you talking about.'

my only gripe is that they won't include my blog on it, for reasons completely unknown to me. i'm sure i'd get more traffic if they did.

the table is the table, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:42 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, you'd think they'd take anyone that submitted a link to them.

anyway, i find it very handy when i'm looking to hear a track or two from an album i'm thinking about buying. i use it all the time.

that's weird. I don't know how they pick who to index but I'd just put a link to them on your blog. if they get some hits from it they might add you. it does generate a lot of traffic, esp. if you post something on a slow day and it stays on the front page "recently updated" section for a long time.

i guess putting a link on makes sense... but they're so big! part of my gripe is also that i see shit up there that I PUT ON MY BLOG FIRST. yknow?

the table is the table, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

it just makes little sense-- the only reason i could think of is that it hasn't been around long enough?

the table is the table, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

uh, i just sent the hypem folks an e-mail asking about my omission. and they added my blog. so that was simple!

the table is the table, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Anthony is a really, really nice guy and he'll be a millionaire before he's 35.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i use it daily. they were soliciting coders on the splash page a while back!

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:26 (sixteen years ago) link

The only real problem with the Hype Machine (apart from trawling through lists of 15 Spoon tracks in a row) it that it really lays bare the unbelievable and terrifying amount of stuff out there. At the same time, I really wish it had existed when I was a teenager and had time to spend six hours a day listening to music.

Matt DC, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually that could easily apply to most new technology...

The NEW Hype Machine wants to see 10,000 of you before it comes out to play. Leave this page open and it'll reload when everyone's here.

why do i doubt they can get 10000 people to log on at the same time?

Roz, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not technically logging in, it's just 10,000 current page views - just keep a tab open in firefox and keep refreshing.

the hype machine folks probably see this as a form of viral marketing to create buzz for the re-launch.

However only at 1607

djmartian, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Idolator.com seems to be always referencing Hype Machine (and using it to take shots at indie-rock mp3 bloggers)

curmudgeon, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link

However only at 1607

Says 1603 for me now. They'll never get there if they keep counting backwards!

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:45 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah the numbers go up and down.

Roz, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

this hype machine viral marketing technique of an announcement splash page is poorly executed though. It frustrates people rather than creating a positive user experience.

djmartian, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it's balls. just launch it already.

blueski, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

morelike HYPE machine amirite?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:04 (sixteen years ago) link

They're not counting backwards - it wants 10,000 people to be viewing that page at the same time. If somebody browses away from it, the number goes down.

Davey D, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

The music blog zeitgeist is made up of the top 50 artists, the top 50 albums and the top songs of 2009 according to the posts of the music bloggers associated to the hype machine site. The songs and albums are all streamable. 2009 must have been a phantastic year in music given that a remix of The Police's Roxanne is in the top songs list. ;-)

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 13:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i'll always remember 2009 as the year we lived our lives to a tapestry of classic songs like Super Mash Bros - Living The Dream (I'm On A Float), The Priors - What You Need (Hey Champ Remix) and We Plants Are Happy Plants - Apollo
