i love Red Red Meat - i own and love album #s 2 thru 4 (jimmywine, bunny, manger) and haven't picked up the first one yet (is it s/t, right?) though i will next time i see it used. an absolutely timeless band, and an excellent counterpoint to Califone -- both utterly classic.

haven't heard the Grifters. what are they like anyway?

royal trux meets captin beefheart

I could never get into Royal Trux so I dont agree with that comparison.
Royal Trux were weirder (the singing) and more over the top and sounded a little more rednecky. The Grifters were distortion and grit - much better singing and rustic undertones.

did you listen to the later period of royal trux?

it's not so over the top as the early stuff.

I remember describing The Grifters as "so dead and so alive at the same time". (maybe it was red red meat)

no I gave up on Royal Trux almost within 2 days.

oh and definitely pick up the first Red Red Meat. It sounds like a faster Jimmywine Majestic. And original singing. Shorter songs.

And what do you think of Califone, SenorLorax?

Califone is constructed perfectly but it puts me to sleep. The lyrics are great though.

maybe these two bands need an update c/d.

For one thing, the first link didn't mention anything of their first two eps or the fact that almost all of their singles and songs on various artists compilations sound totally different than the album versions. THey are better actually. Take one of my favorite grifters songs - "Make It Happen" on Ten Cent Fix compilation. The orgianl song was calle Tipped Over. Like most of their singles, it is the lo-fi version, which I prefer.

I've always loved the Meat. I saw them open for the Smashing Pumpkins and went out and bought Jimmy - I sent in a poem to the P.O. Box and Tim Rutili sent back a polaroid art piece interpretation of it (hey, I was a freshman in high school so it was cool to me).

Those three albums beginning with Jimmy are very strong to me. I never understood some of the lame reviews of Bunny - I thought it was a very tight album.

"Bunny Gets Paid" is the band's high water mark. It's the perfect blend of the Stonesy swagger of the first two records and the fractured beauty of their later stuff.

Nicely put. Here's what I mean from allmusic:

The first half of the album is a letdown, never really catching fire. All of the ingredients that made past Red Red Meat recording expeditions so successful are present, but the actual songs aren't very strong.

I never found this to be true. Carpet of Horses for one can't be denied.

man- I only listen to the same old music. but then I found sin ropas which is goodness in the vein of red red meat meeting an experimental califone...

but now I'm back to square 1 again. I bought the Hot Monkey cd recently, that was good and all. But I think its time that I start branching out to other singer/songwriters that are not affiliated with red red meat or grifters. I just wish I you all could suggest something good.

Can anyone hook me up with a better than 128kbs rip of Jimmywine Majestic? Sounds like something I'd love, but I'd want to sample it before buying it since the cheapest I can find is about 10 bucks with shipping.

There is another link (in my link above) to a Pitchfork article (ahem) where someone admits that Red Red Meat aren't just "good" like their reviews initially stated, but are actually "pretty great stuff"...

2.they re-listened to the record a few times
3.they changed their mind

IS STEP #2 SO HARD? WHY PITCHFORK WHY??!? WHY MUST COMMONERS LISTEN AND REVIEW MUSIC WHEN THEY HAVE NOT YET EVOLVED TO KNOW WHAT SOUNDS REALLY GOOD (or really bad) UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE AND THEY ARE OLD AND HAVE WASTED A GOOD CHUNK OF THEIR LIFE LISTENING TO WHAT THEY NOW REALIZE IS CRAPPY MUSIC, WHY?!?!?

WHY can't people notice genius to begin with? I blame a lack of variety of music in most people's life, and no years of experience listening to challenging music, or all music for that matter. A qualification of being a reviewer for pitchfork should be acknowledgment of band _____ and obvious dislike for band ______.

Developing the right (better) musical aesthetic must also involve following through the right life experiences, thus providing the proper knowledge to make assessments on what should be aesthetically pleasing or not – meaning that some people suck at life and that's why they cant realize what they are listening to is good until it’s too late. These unenlightened people need to get a better grasp of life’s greater intricacies and profundity or else they will never ‘awaken’ themselves to great music and remain oblivious dolts that are missing out on both awesome music and LIFE.

YEAH, being unlearned and inexperienced means you suck at life and will never get the greater picture or good music for that matter.

I liked Red Red Meat, but I thought The Grifters were great, better than Pavement or Sebadoh or a half dozen other bands they got compared to from the same time or at least that is one reporters opinion.
