I heard it was Argentinian, but who knows. Other people on the internet don't seem to, but maybe you do?
Check it out (streaming and/or download): http://www.ubu.com/film/bunuel.html
It's the first song/piece in the film, and just to be clear no i'm not wondering what wagner piece it is.
Even if you don't know the song, check out the film if you haven't seen it! it's short and obviously whacked the fuck out.
if you need extra incentive, the pixies song 'debaser' was inspired by it ("slicin up eyeballs i want you to know that i am un chien andalusia" and so on)

it was made silent. it's customary to play tango music at the start.

it was indeed originally released as silent, but then years later bunuel added a soundtrack. regardless, there is a tango at the start and i want to know what it is because it's awesome

And according to one site, there's a version with no tangos. In any event, the same site identifies the tangos (apparently there are two) as (the extremely unfortunately titled) "Tango Argentino" and "Recuerdo." HOWEVER. That info doesn't seem to help. There is a SONG called "Tango Argentino" written by Juan Maglio and Alfred Bigeschi. I heard Carlos Gardel's version of the song and that's not the song that appears in the film (unless, of course, it's sped up or somehow maipluated which I highly doubt). And there is a song called "Recuerdo" by Osvaldo Pugliese. But I don't recognize its melody/rhythm in the film.
I know this doesn't help much. But perhaps you can listen to other versions of these songs and see if they come close to the ones which appear in the film.
You're definitely not the first person to ask this question. I've wondered about it myself. And if you do find out, please report back.
