does Tarkus count as sci-fi or fantasy?
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
If there's a giant mechanical aardvark involved, it's most certainly sci-fi.

― t**t, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

― JN$OT, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Not that anyone would vote for them, but those Coheed & Cambria albums surely fit the bill, no?
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)
Everything by Rhapsody, although I guess that's fantasy rather than sci-fi.

Dream Theater, a prog-metal band, has released Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, a full-length concept piece about a man trying to solve a murder in his past life through hypnotherapy
― Jordan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)
Since this is all basically the same sci-fi rock opera split over about 10 albums, maybe it should count as one?

This synopsis of "Remember The Future" by Nektar has gotta qualify. I'm sure others by them do too.
"Having visited the planet many times before, Bluebird has always found that the people he met couldn't accept him for what he was rather than how he looked. With his blue skin and wings they either ran away from him or tried to harm him. He makes mental contact with a young blind boy and tells him stories of past and future in the form of visions and amongst these visions he places a picture of himself. The boy is not disturbed by the visions but confused by all that Bluebird tells him."

i was going to say No Earthly Connection (still no fucking cd version of that - sort it out), but thought its not really Sci-Fi is it ? how about his pretty dire 1984 album then - though thats not really prog.

How did we get this far without mentioning Hawkwind's Space Ritual?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! My bad.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)
Blows Against The Empire (if it's prog enough) and Space Ritual Live (if it's operatic enough).

intergalactic touring band, from 1977 amg: "The Intergalactic Touring Band was not a real group; it was a science fiction concept created and organized by Stephan Galfas and Marty Scott, written by Danny Beckerman and Wil Malone, and recorded as a one-off all-star album by a large cast including Rod Argent, Arthur Brown, Clarence Clemons, Annie Haslam, Ben E. King, and Meat Loaf, among many others, in 1977." i'm gonna guess there's at least one legendary pink dots album that qualifies, too

Celestial Ocean is awesome.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)
Plenty of Eloy albums are sci-fi rock operas, I just can't remember any of the plots as they were all so stupid.
Dawn Ocean The Power And The Passion Planets Metromania
and I think several more. Avoid.
― Matt #2, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
The Lord Weird Slough Feg's _Traveller_ (It's pretty much trad metal, but it gets bonus points for being based on a Games Developer's Workshop RPG!) It's tempting to mention Voivod too, but that was more of a silly concept that they never used to tell a coherent story.
Should we include _Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots_? I never paid enough attention to the lyrics to know.
Random ego-trivia: I once made a shoot 'em up game for a programming class, and one of the badguy-spaceships was that Magma symbol. The soundtrack was a ripping Carcass-MIDI! (Corporeal Jigsore Quandary, IIRC)

space hymns. that's a for sure one
― kamerad, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)
Forget Hawkwind, I can't believe no one's mentioned The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway yet!
Also Bo Hanson did a Lord of the Rings LP, Starcastle did A Night On Bald Mountain. Camel did some Snow Goose thing. (Edit: these aren't SF, I guess, but they've still got some fantasy elements.)
I'll have to browse my vinyl when I get home.

space hymns
― kamerad, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)
A-ha. I have that one as well. Also got it without prior knowledge. Well to be honest, I got curious because "the soon-to-be 10cc members" were mentioned :) The 10cc factor didn't matter much in the end, I found Ramases enjoyable anyway.
