Erasure's "Chorus" vs Pet Shop Boys' "Behaviour"

Myself, I can't decide. Sometimes I prefer the more straightforward style of "Chorus", and sometimes the brassier feel of "Behaviour".

Both albums were released at around the same time. Both are by synth duos. Both have, for want of a better word, a "wintery" feel to them. Both albums have tracks with sparse arrangements. Both have a number of themes in common. But which do you prefer, and why?

Behaviour by eight million miles, although I like "Love To Hate You" and the title t rack just fine.

I like "Chorus" better than everything else on both of them but Behaviour is probly a better album.

"Chorus" is the best thing Erasure ever did and one of the best synthpop albums ever, which makes it an easy choice for me. I love "Behaviour" too though.

Lyrically PSB have always beaten Erasure, but on "Chorus" they come pretty close. Probably the two albums show that PSB were the better all rounders, while Erasure were the better singles band, at least up until that point, then they started to slide a bit.

a better singles band??? You're nuts!

Erasure had a better singer. Beyond that... PSB by a million miles. (The songs "Chorus" and "Love To Hate You" are awesome, though.)

Sometimes I like that Erasure get sweaty and Hi-NRG in ways that PSB are too aloof to really do.

Well up until "I Say I Say I Say", I think that Erasure were more consistant, with the added boost of Andy Bell's superior singing. I can happily listen to "Pop 20 Hits" from beginning to end, but there are always tracks on "Discography" that I'll skip over. "Love Comes Quickly" and "Heart" are two that I always give a miss.

Try listening to "Very"! It's like PSB finally decided to jump about a bit. And NT's singing is improved a lot as well.

I dunno, I can dance quite a bit to the Boys. And you skip "Heart"?!? But that's the one time the PSB try to write an Erasure song! It's great! You can dance!

But, to return to the original question, Chorus is more danceable than Behaviour

Having just dug out "Chorus" and listened to it again, I agree. The "Further Listening" version of "Behaviour" adds a lot of upbeat tracks though. Something else I'd forgotten was that both albums represent a shift away from digital synths towards analogue stuff.

When "Chorus" the single came out I thought it was totally Erasure copping some Acid House sounds.

A bit interesting with all this discussion about the upbeat stuff. The tracks I like best on "Chorus" are the less upbeat ones. "Siren" and "Home" are really beautiful songs. But so is "Breath Of Live" as well. IMO their best ever single.
