"love affair" off fever shd've been a single

deej, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda wanted to go SAW, but "Love At First Sight" is heat

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Love at First Sight" forever

groovemaaan, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

My autochoice is "What Do I Have to Do?" but I'm mulling it over cos I have much much love for "Put Yourself in My Place" and "Confide In Me".

When I wuz in a band we used to play "Shocked".

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

"i believe in you" by a country mile.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

i can't remember if i meant 'LAFS' not 'IYE'.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Probly should've left out the Goth-bait single.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

word

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

i was going to put "this will fucking win owing to ILX lurkers being legion of fucking gothtards" next to it but didn't.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Have I already done the story about the nightclub here that had a revolving wooden floor? We used to have mad Saturday nights with Vodka/Red Bulls and "Spinning Around" and that shit.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Where the Wild Roses Grow (with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)

^^^ talking about this one? (xpost)

yeah...i voted for it, so what?

stephen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^ ILX lurkers being legion of fucking gothtards

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Confide in Me

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

'breathe' but really there were about 7 other good picks too

omar little, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going for "Put Yourself in My Place". I was worried that the video was swaying my choice but

a) It prolly won't get enough love here, and

b) It's a fantastic optimism/wooziness tinged with understated melancholy joint that works well in so many moods, and

c) The video.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

gotta be slow
that opening even now sends shivers all over.
pure electro brilliance.

W4LTER, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like 'slow'. it's sort of boring and funkless, but i guess that's the point.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

slow is a second tier one for me too

deej, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Love At First Sight."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head": for me in the US I totally missed her music between this and "The Loco-motion" and well that makes for an easy choice. I guess I should dig deeper---impressive number of different choices here so far.

Euler, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

umm what happened to giving you up (http://www.discogs.com/release/432953)

i love those remixes ..

mark e, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

there's always one.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

"love at first sight" pretty easy

balls, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" - it's a great single even before the lyrics start. "Confide In Me" and "Spinning Around" would be my second and third choices. All the SAW stuff I'd burn on a bonfire, and there are a couple of other duds like the Robbie Williams thing.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

under-rated:
Word Is Out
Put Yourself in My Place
Did It Again
On a Night like This
In Your Eyes
Red Blooded Woman

blueski, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I've only heard bits of the new one -- the whoo bits -- and it sounds like the best one yet but might get boring over & over. She has done so much that is mediocre -- even more than Madonna -- but snoball is probably correct.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

better the devil you know

jabba hands, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^ probably the best of the SAW tracks, imo.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Too many people said "Love At First Sight" so I voted for "Come Into My World." I was torn, but that def helped with my decision. I wish I could have voted for both.

billstevejim, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

i believe in you by far, with better the devil trailing behind..

electricsound, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

i wish there was a thin white duke remix of IBIY

electricsound, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Love at first sight: Orgasmic

Christyles, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "I Believe In You". The early stuff is obviously throwaway compared with everything from her last two albums and those even more recent singles.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

And, yes, "Where The Wild Roses Grow" will probably win. It's so different from the rest, and appeals to a lot of people who dislike everything else she has done.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

"On A Night Like This" obvs.

danzig, Friday, 19 October 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Where the Wild Roses Grow" would be better if it had a tune.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 19 October 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

Confide; no question. God, she has so many great singles though.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Friday, 19 October 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

The best of the SAW tracks would be "Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi". Probably their best moment besides "Showing Out" and "Respectable".

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 October 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

confide vs put yerself in me place. hmmmm.

I'm v v bored of spinning around and can't get yer out of me head.

ledge, Friday, 19 October 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

GBI: German Bold Italic (with Towa Tei)

I've never heard this, but always wanted to. There should be more songs sung from the POV of a font. How is it?

But anyway, Slow, followed by Spinning Around. I also really like Put Yourself In My Place and the Fischerspooner remix of Come Into My World. Maybe heard Can't Get You Out of My Head too many times ...

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 19 October 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

How is it?

it's good: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UlAUJCiLpVI

blueski, Friday, 19 October 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

that appears to be a 2000 remix, not much different from the original tho

blueski, Friday, 19 October 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

Cheers. I can't youtube at work, but will check it.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 19 October 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

it's more cave than kylie, though, and was on cave's album; was it really a kylie single? i find that hard to believe...

stephen, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for 'German Bold Italic', as I had much love for it (and pretty much anything Towa) back in the day. Looking at the youtube, I suppose it has dated a little bit, but not too badly at all, really. I don't regret my vote.

'2 Hearts' is the new one, right? So what is 'Sometime Samurai'?

emil.y, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

that track she did with Gerling is good too, not a single tho

blueski, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but it made the singles charts, which Nick Cave singles don't do.

yeah i know that, but was it *technically* released as a cave single, or a kylie single?

stephen, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

Give Me Just a Little More Time, but I'll be alone with that...

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 19 October 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

'Roses' was a Cave single, the first off 'Murder Ballads'. Kylie was only a guest vocalist; one of many on the album.

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 19 October 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

"Shocked" for me, easily. Actually, "I Believe in You" is a close second, with "What Do I Have to Do?", "Come Into My World" and "Breathe" following behind. ("Breathe" >>>> "Confide in Me").

DavidM, Friday, 19 October 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

What about "It's No Secret?" I remember hearing that on "Casey's Top 40" in early '89.

Fitzcarraldo, Saturday, 20 October 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

I am stunned by the large amount of people going for SAW material here. Must be a matter of that pathetic anti-rockist contrarism.

By then, Kylie was just a brainless marionette, doing whatever Stock/Aitken/Waterman told her to. She just borrowed them her voice - and her looks - and performed all those brainless throwaway teenybopper anthems without much artistic value.

Today, Kylie has a considerably amount of artistic control, writing much of her material herself, and she has released a couple of excellent electro tinged albums. The Kylie of today is just so much better than the old Kylie of the late 80s/early 90s!

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, I honestly love you dude, but:

Must be a matter of that pathetic anti-rockist contrarism

Fuck Off.

Lots of that stuff is gold. If you seriously think her level of "artistic control" is that much less then/that much more now then you really are utterly naive.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

I had to vote for "Love At First Sight" but I want to affirm the following are excellent:

- Better The Devil You Know
- Shocked
- What Do I Have To Do
- Confide In Me
- Put Yourself In My Place
- Cowboy Style (best single off Impossible Princess, strangely excluded here)
- Your Disco Needs You (best single off Light Years, strangely excluded here)
- Can't Get You Out Of My Head
- In Your Eyes
- Come Into My World
- Slow
- Chocolate
- I Believe In You

I never liked "Spinning Around" at all, it seemed to me some kind of awful nadir of slick early 00s disco-pop (was it released before or after Modjo's "Lady" I wonder? Weird how she came back with "Love @ First Sight" and made instead the apotheosis of slick early 00s disco-pop, albeit in 2001).

HOWEVER, the "Spinning Around" live mash-up with the groove from CeCe Peniston's "Finally" is one of the most amazing things she's ever done.

Tim F, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

- Cowboy Style (best single off Impossible Princess, strangely excluded here)
- Your Disco Needs You (best single off Light Years, strangely excluded here)

think they were australia-only or something so i banhammered them.

iirc 'spinning around' came out the start of summer 2000, 'lady' at the end.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

That first oughties album was a bit too disco, but the next two were excellent. Including the singles, although "Love At First Sight" is a bit too much of the same disco taste.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't like "Lady" - think it's dead boring tbh - but love love love "Spinning Around". In my head that song is all chorus, just that ridiculously joyous loop going round and round and round into theoretical infinity.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, it came out at about the same time I came out, perhaps I was dealing with unacknowledged internalised homophobia at the time?!?

But then why do I love "Your Disco Needs You"?

Tim F, Monday, 22 October 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

If only 'Butterfly' and 'Light Years' and half of Light Years were singles.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 22 October 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Slow but it could've just as easily been Confide in Me

I know, right?, Monday, 22 October 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

The singles straight after Can't Get You Out of my Head were really bad! LAFS, etc. Red Blooded Woman totally underrated.

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Put Yourself in My Place, but the Light Years song I wish I could've voted for is Disco Down.

JimD, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

Love at First Sight is her masterpiece. Better the Devil You Know is the only pre-2000 Kylie song I really love.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Victory for the people

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm happy to see that the highest scoring of her SAW collaboration is no better than #6.

Obviously few Nick Cave-digging goth lurkers have voted.

"Love at First Sight" may be the more accomplished song but "Can't Get You out of My Head" is one of the most undeniable bangers ever

late, late vote for Come into My World

plp will eat itself (NickB), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 13:00 (eight years ago)

Interesting to consider the Kylie singles released since this poll was conducted - from a distance it's almost as if "I Believe In You" was kind of a final landing point and since then she's been spinning (around) in place.

But then you get close up to them and "The One" is so brilliant, so monumental - especially in the Freemasons Remix guise - echoes of "He's On The Phone" in its becalmed yet ecstatic splendour.

And "Get Out Of My Way" is an irresistible jam.

I also have a soft spot for "Wow".

Tim F, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 13:13 (eight years ago)

Just dropped in to say that The Mad March Hare remix of "Better the devil you know" is a banger

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 13:25 (eight years ago)

“the one,” “get out of my way,” and “wow” are prob my top three kylie singles

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 13:50 (eight years ago)

X and Aphrodite are both outstanding albums. Body Language isn't quite their level but still very good. Kiss Me Once is good in parts but not the Kylie album I ever turn to.

nomar, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 14:10 (eight years ago)

'Confide In Me' ... the best thing she ever did.

oh wait i forgot my favorite song ever made by anyone, "put yourself in my place," but otherwise what i said was accurate

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

"Put Yourself", "In My Arms" and then maybe a 5-way tie but i still love "What Do I Have to Do?"

The Walter Mittyville Horror (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 21:07 (eight years ago)

"Slow" is such an amazing song... I've also been enjoying the much-overlooked "Skirt" a whole lot

seconding the love for "chocolate," one of many perfect singles from kylie

joshywinty (josh), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 21:30 (eight years ago)

"Slow" in its extended form sounds amazing in a nightclub, so sensual and serpentine

"Love At First Sight" is such a joy, "Please Stay" and "On A Night Like This" and "In Your Eyes" are all seriously under-rated

if Madonna didn't already exist I think my relationship with Kylie would be far more significant

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 23:20 (eight years ago)

If I had to condense the Essence of Kylie into three 21st century songs it'd be "Wow," "Get Out of My Way," and "Love at First Sight."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 October 2017 23:31 (eight years ago)

Yeah "Wow" is pretty special, incredible production. Wonder how it would have placed. Damn, I totally forgot "Put Yourself"! Need to have a Kylie day now

Kylie is an artist who I have barely dug into beyond the singles - is there more there? Fever has some excellent album tracks but that's all I know. Would she be a good artist for a listening thread, or are y'all already too familiar?

Vinnie, Thursday, 5 October 2017 00:58 (eight years ago)

she's been recording excellent full lengths for a while now, so, yeah, go for it

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2017 01:04 (eight years ago)

from Impossible Princess on, all of her albums have been at least worth a listen or classics. like i said, not super keen on the last one but looking forward to the new one. the live stuff i've heard on Spotify has been surprisingly good too; the enthusiasm of the audiences is pretty great.

nomar, Thursday, 5 October 2017 01:16 (eight years ago)

Sweet, another artist to binge on

Vinnie, Thursday, 5 October 2017 01:23 (eight years ago)

Kylie is my angel. Ride or die since I was 11. And I still have unreserved corny love for all that SAW stuff like “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” and “Got to be Certain”

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 October 2017 01:29 (eight years ago)

Lots of excellent Kylie opinions here. My top three Kylie songs are currently, Chocolate, I Believe In You and The One. It's ridiculous that The One was wasn't the lead from X. I like 2 Hearts fine, but the other three singles were so much stronger and seemed like easier hits.

I have to give a shout out to the Fischerspooner remix of Come Into My World. One of my favourite remixes ever.

kitchen person, Thursday, 5 October 2017 01:58 (eight years ago)

If we’re talking singles let’s pour one out for the Studio remix of 2 Hearts, which has the added benefit of making an underwhelming song seem truly magical, and alchemically transmuting cod-archness into aching sincerity.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 October 2017 03:12 (eight years ago)

Talking remixes, I mean

Tim F, Thursday, 5 October 2017 03:12 (eight years ago)

Love At First Sight is all-time, but there's too many to list

Better The Devil You Know is my favourite SAW production
