So anyway, I've been on a huge Sab kick lately and I've always had this theory that there are enough weird little bits strewn through all the Ozzy era albums that you could actually assemble a sort of strange and awesome neoclassical/freak-folk/dub/psychedelic/dub/piano-ballad album from their whole first lineup discography....
This is my attempt.....I think it turned out pretty well, I've been listening to it quite a bit, and I think it's cool to hear all this stuff in a different context. Drives home the point that -- at the end of the day, despite all the doom -- Sabbath WERE hippies. Also, I get a little sick of reading summaries of Sabbath that seem to think they were a lot more one dimensional than they a really were.
**NOTE: I know that Supertzar is only "arguably" quiet, there's def. some electric riffing, but it's fairly subdued and it breaks into some quieter pastoral choral stuff quite often....plus, it's so bizarre I couldn't NOT include it, breaking the rules is part of the reason you have rules, right?
Tracklist:
1 Embryo (Master of Reality) 2 Supertzar (Sabotage) 3 Orchid (Master of Reality) 4 She's Gone (Technical Ecstasy) 5 Changes (Vol. 4) 6 FX (Vol. 4) 7 Planet Caravan (Paranoid) 8 Fluff (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) 9 It's Alright (Technical Ecstasy) 10 Laguna Sunrise (Vol. 4) 11 Solitude (Master of Reality)

awesome, m@tt!
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)
thx pretzel
this is way more important than a new yorker article trust me
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)
yes. yes it is.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)
thanks, i've just heard the staples and i'm not familiar with the body of their work, so this should be a nice contrast against sweet leaf and war pigs riff riff riff
― trashthumb, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)
Nice. Maybe you should splice in the acoustic coda from Symptom of the Universe too??
― Jordan, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)
yeah unfortunately i don't have the technical know how to do that kind of stuff, there were a couple of cool bits i wanted but they were attached to big rockers.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)
also: "It's Alright" features a rare Bill Ward vocal
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
"this is way more important than a new yorker article trust me"
So OTM-as is this
"Also, I get a little sick of reading summaries of Sabbath that seem to think they were a lot more one dimensional than they a really were."
How about "Blow on a Jug"?
Also, I get a little sick of reading summaries of Sabbath that seem to think they were a lot more one dimensional than they a really were.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)
Terrible editing on my part. Apologies
hey bill, i wasn't familiar w/that song...i googled and I guess it was a Sabotage outtake that was on the black box?
all my sabbath is on used vinyl so I'm really only familiar with the albums themselves...i'll have to try to find that song.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)
but i think this tracklist flows pretty well actually the way i did it as an album on its own
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)
Matt:
Yes, it's at the end of the "Writ" so to include it you would have to work the same magic as you would for the snippet from "Symptom of the Universe"
And I think certain original pressings of Sabotage had it on there.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)
(Matt, if you want to do something like that it's pretty easy to dl a free wav editor like Audacity and chop it)
― Jordan, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)
See also: "Don't Start (Too Late)" which is its own track (only 49 seconds) so doesn't require any tech know how.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)
wow, supertzar is crazy
― Jordan, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
yeah don't start too late was almost on, but the version I DL'd it started with the last power chord of hole in the sky, which made it always sort of clash when i was messing around with tracklistings, the transition was too grating for me, so i left it off...
maybe next time i'll get some editing stuff, but i've already wasted more time on this than probably any rational person should : )
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
That's valid!
Superztar sounds like Sabbath recruted the choir from Hell help out. Freaky shit.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
Very nice! Thanks, Matt.
― Brad C., Friday, 19 October 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)
i can't use rapidshare at work, but wanna hear this ;_;
― mizzell, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)
This is awesome! People tripping on "Supertzar" really should check out Sabotage in its entirety, pretty gonzo as a piece.
― da croupier, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)
Oh yeah! Thanks, Matt. Never heard the Technical Ecstacy stuff before.
― JN$OT, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)
SBS went against the Sabbath grain nicely too."Spiral Architect" is the best Who's Next song not on Who's Next.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i'd never actually heard sabbath bloody sabbath or technical ecstasy (or never say die -- jeezus that's horrible) until now...lots of cool lazer light show synths on SBS that surprised me.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)
dude what are you talking about... 'Never Say Die' is a good album.
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)
luke's wall?
― am0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)
i listen again, but it sounded like a band that needed a hot Dio injection something fierce to me.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

"i listen again, but it sounded like a band that needed a hot Dio injection something fierce to me."
"dude what are you talking about... 'Never Say Die' is a good album."
These two things are not mutually exclusive, and both happen to be true. I love Never Say Die.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)
i have to admit it sounded better on second listen. but i think i like technical ecstasy more.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)
changes is so corny. good mix otherwise.
― LaMonte, Friday, 19 October 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
changes is beautiful
― chaki, Friday, 19 October 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)
Well done M@tt! And if want to redo it with "Don't Start Too Late" and "Sleeping Village" (from the debut), I highly recommend this free trial version of RipEditBurn. Then, you can isolate the quiet parts, maybe throw a little flanging or reverb on top, and maybe play 'em backwards (to listen for secret backmasked messages.)
― Myonga Vön Bontee, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)
Nice!!!!

Yeah, thanks for bumping this thread -- I have these all around but it's good to hear it all in Matt's mix!
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 October 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)
And yes, if people haven't heard all of Sabotage, you need to...
i liked it! i hadn't heard a few of those later ones before. good stuff.
― one time, Sunday, 28 October 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)
I just listened to this, and imagined a new band who had this as an album. And I love that band. It almost reminds me of a krautrock band or something.
― filthy dylan, Monday, 29 October 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)
I tried to do the same but it's that old purple polar bear thing. Still, it'd make for one wacky ass record. An instrumental snippet as an opener and then a piece of headin' off into battle nuttiness followed by another instrumental snippet all before the first real vocal and longest track which is something from Technical Ecstasy. Some prog-folk nightmare, for sure.
And I second the love for Sabotage, the first side of which is the solidest slab of Sab ever.
Thanx, Matt!
― Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)
And WTF is that FX thing? That's post punk I daresay.
― Bimble, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Sabotage is a goddam prog-metal masterpiece! Praise be to Chuckles Eddy for introducing me to it via his awe-inspiring metal book.
(I still can't believe how well this mix works, Matt!!)
― JN$OT, Monday, 29 October 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)
Great... now if only there was an episode of Yacht Rock about the making of It's Alright...
― Rombald, Monday, 29 October 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

You and a lot of other people!
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)
Were there songs you wanted to include and didn't, Matt?
― Bimble, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)
This makes for perfect grey gloomy winter morning listening.

"Changes" is great -- a power ballad for werewolves.
What else is great: this mix! THANX!

Are there any threads on ILM devoted to making compilations that showcase a side of an artist that might not immediately spring to mind when one thinks of said artist?
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 20:13 (twelve years ago)
Here's a heavier, but hopefully more blues rock Sabbath compilation I made influenced by the quiet comp.

Are there any threads on ILM devoted to making compilations that showcase a side of an artist that might not immediately spring to mind when one thinks of said artist?kind of a good idea... like the Grateful Dead Disco Album or something?

Some concert-cruising with "Eyes of the World" might fit---?

Almost a decade later, this still remains one of my favorite ever things on ILM.
― Alex in NYC, Monday, 28 March 2016 14:00 (ten years ago)

This Sabbath rookie asks: do the post-Ozzy years have enough material to make a "Quiet Black Sabbath Album II" ?
― TheNuNuNu, Friday, 3 May 2024 00:22 (two years ago)
ooh that's a good question I never considered
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 May 2024 00:33 (two years ago)
I’d say you could definitely make a soft rock ozzy album out of the power ballads etc in his solo career. One would definitely have to include the duet with Lita Ford.
