I know he likes his Donovan greatest hits, America greatest hits, Eagles greatest hits, Animals greatest hits, Rolling Stones hits, Seals and Croft hits, Jim Croce hits, Simon and Garfunkel hits, Beatles, Pink Floyd dark side of the moon...
I need suggestions of other similar musicians or albums he might like so I can get him a birthday present.
One quick question: what's the best Paul McCartney album?

I think I'm gonna try to get the Kinks ultimate collection and 4 other cds including paul mccartney... enough to fill up his car's cd player

I would like to make a The Who mix with songs that aren't usually on the greatest hits albums

How about a subscription to MOJO as well?

I wish I could find music my Dad liked, the only reasonably good music he listens to is the Righteous Brothers, besides that it's Celtic music compilations from Wal-Mart and some weird reggae album he got because he went to Jamaica on his honeymoon. I can't describe it except it was definitely compiled for tourists.

Hmmm, maybe Three Dog Night or Bread? They've both got fine greatest-hits collections.
My own dad's favourite is CCR. Or, rather, was his favourite. (Died one month ago yesterday.) :'(
RIP

step 1: print out a list of the top 100 albums on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time.
step 2: close your eyes.
step 3: point to any album on list.
step 4: open your eyes.
step 5: repeat 4 more times.
step 6: buy albums.

Ram is a great McCartney album.
As for other artists - maybe last year's Loose Fur album? Born Again in the USA. Contains great riffage/songwriting.
― willem, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
Well I got The Kinks ultimate collection and I'm busy making a The Who disc set. Now I'm gonna make a Paul McCartney mix and the remaining will be wither Donovan albums and/or The Bread hits.
Loose Fur is great btw. That is the kind of music I listen to. (actually, a little less rockabilly... I prefer The Sea and Cake and Archer Prewitt or Jim O'Rourke's solo albums).

based on the above, you could simultaneously surprise and delight dad with harry nilsson. nilsson schmillson is the standard studio album, but personal best is a fab anthology.

Ok, I want to get my Dad a couple of record for his birthday. He is a typical Uncut reader, but I have kind of lost track of that trad-Indie/Americana stuff recently so was hoping for some suggestions. He doesn't like folk or "proper" country, but the sort of pseudo contemporary stuff you get in publications like Uncut and Mojo. Stuff I have bought him in the past that he has enjoyed:
Bonnie Prince Billy, The Hold Steady, Iron & Wine, Brian Jonestown Massacre
All time favourites to give you a better idea of his taste:
Depeche Mode, Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Beat, "Bhangra beats" compilations, The Orb, Leftfield, The Ramones, The Doors, Nirvana Unplugged
I want to get him something that came out relatively recently say in the last couple of years, as "classic" stuff he basically has (e.g. the entire Beatles back catalogue). Oh and how bad is the new Depeche Mode record?

srsly, travelling band are a very excellent multi-piece british country blues band with a fair share of woozy Young/The Band style songs. Their album's quite sleepy and slow paced, but there are enough uptempo tracks to stop it being boring. I recommend, especially for dads, but also ilxors.

Thanks that was quick. There is another criteria - the album has to be available on Amazon (UK) for delivery to Hong Kong, which is why I am finding it tricky as normally I would just go in a record shop and listen to a bunch of stuff. This stipulation unfortunately seems to rule out Travelling band and Smoke Fairies, although Handsome Family might work. Generally he prefers the more uptempo "bar rock" end of the Americana spectrum. Also I can't believe I forgot to add this but his favourite, favourite band of all time is Dr Feelgood - he allegedly saw them 37 times in his youth.

The Robert Plant and Alison Krauss record, Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy, how 'bout the new Neil Young Archives set? xp

If he likes Feelgood, then someone like Hound Dog Taylor would be a good choice. He's from the 70's, but plays really raw and raucous boogified blues. Kind of a precursor to some of the Fat Possum stuff (RL Burnside etc).

Hound Dog Taylor = I think we might have a winner. Any particular records you'd recommend or are they fairly comparable?
