discography cribbed from some website, it's not like I've got hours to spend on this ok

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

i'm set free, for being the template for galaxie 500's career, and for the incredible cover done by rowland s howard (sadly not recorded)

electricsound, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

isn't this like velvets poll #6

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

i never figured out if lou was being ironic on "jesus"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

MIA: "White Light/White Heat" and "One of These Days."

I'll take "Andy's Chest," not because it's their greatest song but because it was a joy to rediscover after only having the Peel Slowly box for a few years. That VU album is the most fun.

eatandoph, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

What Goes On!

iago g., Saturday, 20 October 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely "Sister Ray," for being the pinnacle of their excess. Drugs, sex, melodically senseless instrumentation, murder, and a seventeen-minute running time. And all the while, Lou never loses his maternal instinct-- "You know you shouldn't do that, don't you know you'll stain the carpet!?"

adamj, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

i never figured out if lou was being ironic on "jesus"

The music sure isn't.

"What Goes On."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

"What Goes On," btw.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

I want to go with Beginning To See The Light.

Bimble, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

"Sister Ray" over "What Goes On" - but I woulda voted for "White Light/White Heat" which I maintain is a lost Jerry Lee masterpiece.

milo z, Saturday, 20 October 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

So many great choices but I cannot deny that what happened inside my brain when I first heard "I'm Waiting for My Man" never happened again, so that.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 20 October 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

run run run

am0n, Saturday, 20 October 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

"I'm Beginning to See the Light". Admittedly, it's not my favorite Velvets song or even the best on the album, but something about it's tone and placement in the album invites a "YES!" when it starts, everytime.

Z S, Saturday, 20 October 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

"sister ray" -- though "white light/white heat" was a close contender.

"she's suckin' on my ding-dong"

Eisbaer, Saturday, 20 October 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

i found a reason

gershy, Saturday, 20 October 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

"sister ray" not only because it is such a gloriously shambolic mess of a song -- appropriate given that lyrically the song is about an incredibly fucked-up mess of a situation -- but also b/c it sounds like a creedence clearwater song from a bizarro/alternate universe. on the CCR comparison, i also think that "what goes on" wouldn't have been out of place among any of fogerty's best songs. both songs choogle!

Eisbaer, Saturday, 20 October 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

are we talking about the live '69 version of 'what goes on'. the best thing about the invention of walkmans was making up a c90 with that on it going on forever.

stirmonster, Saturday, 20 October 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

I...c-c-couldn't hit it sideways
I c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-couldn't hit it sideways

Myonga Vön Bontee, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

It's got to be "Venus in Furs," for corns sake!

JN$OT, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "Candy Says". Such a beautiful song. Proved they were able to write great pop songs whenever they tried to.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

the live '69 version of 'what goes on'

love love love this, especially the organ playing - is that doug?

zappi, Saturday, 20 October 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Where the hell is I Heard Her Call My Name. Its great when the one you want to vote for isn't there.

I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

Sweet Jane, the full version with the extra lyrics.

snoball, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

That VU album was really great! (xpost)

I think Stephanie Says, Sister Ray, What Goes On and Some Kinda Love are in a four way fight for my vote. Love those "S" songs! Some Kinda Love is really fun to play/sing on acoustic guitar.

dlp9001, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

"Ocean"

Eazy, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Is it bad to vote for "I'm sticking with you"?

Emily S., Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

but I woulda voted for "White Light/White Heat"
-- milo z, Friday, October 19, 2007 10:54 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Link

yep, me too.

voted for "I Found a Reason" instead.

stephen, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

sister ray no question, but i heard her call my name needs to be on this poll

69, Saturday, 20 October 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

62. All of the Above

dan selzer, Saturday, 20 October 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "European Son" because it is awesome.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 20 October 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

sister ray no question, but i heard her call my name needs to be on this poll

yeah, "I Heard Her Call My Name" is the one to beat - the first guitar strike after "and then my mind split open" is just WHOA

J0hn D., Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

For me, it's "New Age", either version really.

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hell YEAH!

I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

voted 'sister ray', might've voted 'foggy notion', 'i heard her call my name', and 'white light/white heat'.

balls, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

V in F, but could have voted for almost anything.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

"Heroin" is great, let's just state that for posterity as it probably won't place.

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Might have voted for "Who Loves The Sun" or "Sunday Morning" as well. Had all of their songs sounded like those, and "Candy Says", then Velvet Underground would have been a great band, and not the combination of a few great songs, another bunch of OK ones, and some extremely unlistenable pieces of awful non-musical noise.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

(their worst being either "Sister Ray", "Heroin" or "European Son". All of them insufferable and unforgivable)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

So is the third album your favorite? All nice and melodic front to back.

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

stephen, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

insufferable and unforgivable

That should probably be ILM's banner most days!

JN$OT, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

So is the third album your favorite?

The fourth. Which is even more melodic. They should have gotten rid of John Cale already before the debut.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for "I Can't Stand It" - love the infinitverb guitar solo/tone in it.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 20 October 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oh! Sweet Nuthin'.

I know I should vote for one that Lou sings, but anything that feels this right can't be wrong, people.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 20 October 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

"Black Angel's Death Song"

Sundar, Saturday, 20 October 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

There are no wrong answers in this poll.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 20 October 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

i went candy says

gman, Monday, 22 October 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

another vote here for candy says

drone/a/sore, Monday, 22 October 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

i also think that "what goes on" wouldn't have been out of place among any of fogerty's best songs. both songs choogle!

I've always said but no-one listens, "The Gift" = "Keep On Chooglin'"!! One chord chug, monomaniacal rhythm track, feedback, the lot!!!

Tom D., Monday, 22 October 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

WHOA!!!

Poll without "I Heard her call my name"???

I voted for "The Gift" but I now vote for RESTART POLL!!

Mark G, Monday, 22 October 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Absolutely! Blow up this poll!

Tom D., Monday, 22 October 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

This was a thread where there were guaranteed to be a bunch of great songs with no votes.

da croupier, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

With only 60 or so votes, it's a pretty meaningless poll considering the number of great songs included.

deedeedeextrovert, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

a surprisingly low number of votes cast. poll burnout i guess.

stirmonster, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't even check this because I thought it was another album poll. Lots of good ones with no votes. Not even one vote for "Who Loves The Sun"?

everything, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

I never realized "What Goes On" was so well-loved.

Cool.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 25 October 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

Good poll. Too bad we have to have yet another one because there's no friggin'White Light White Heat!!

I mean come on, people. Surely there must be some motivated indivuduals out there with free time and access to an accurate. comprehensive Velvets cagalot.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 26 October 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

There is a newer one, it got started in the wake of this one, it contains everything except for "coyote" (oops, a bit)

Mark G, Friday, 26 October 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Probably has the wrong songs doing well too, like this one. This one has their three worst songs in the Top 4.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 26 October 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I'll bite: Which one of the top 4 you like?

Mark G, Friday, 26 October 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

I hate "What Goes On" less than the other three.

Obviously Velvets - like most anyone else - were best at nice and melodic ballads such as "Candy Says", "Sunday Morning" and "Who Loves The Sun".

Geir Hongro, Friday, 26 October 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! All the noisiest tracks got the most votes.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 26 October 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Restart: Velvets Poll

Mark G, Friday, 26 October 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

"Obviously"
