Teach me to love Califone

Beacuse from the bits I've heard over the years, I don't. I DO love Red Red Meat, but not at all feeling Califone. P0X? C90? Ringles?

if you listen to roots & crowns and don't like them, you probably aren't going to

Not necessarily so. Califone's album Quicksand/Cradlesnakes was really good, and "poppier" than Roots & Crowns, I think. Try Vamping Again, which is a breezy, Fleetwood Mac-kind of song.

haha, I love red red meat and think califone is blah.... I wonder if califone fans like red red meat a lot... I doubt it

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 21 October 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Vampiring Again," Daniel, thanks for the tip! Anything else along these lines?

it's all about "spider's house"

Converted. Roots and Crowns is one stoney ass album

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's also their poppiest - there's nothing on any of the other albums as out&out pop as Pink & Sour or Black Metal Valentine.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

But yeah, it was good headphones and Roomsound that made me love 'em. Not heard RRM yet.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Silvermine Pictures is probably their catchiest song though.

seven months pass...

Black Metal Valentine is pop for about 70 seconds at the end, and I really wish that bit went on for 3 minutes or so (with the totally awesome if low-mixed drum groove emphasised). It's still a brilliant song, and I guess the way it emerges from cacophony before suddenly ending brings the whole essence.

"3 Legged Animals" is a complete and utter masterpiece which I would not change a note of, on the other hand.

'Vampiring Again' seconded. Even my missus digs that one!

There's a great cover in their roster too - Psychic TVs 'Orchids'
And do you know what?, I still haven't heard the original. Very remiss.

It's a beautiful song

spider's house!

two years pass...

I honestly think their cover of The Orchids is my favourite song.

The original is very pretty as well, btw. I think David Tibet plays glockespiel or something on it. Funny gang those English industrialists/neo-folkers.

Mule, Sunday, 10 April 2011 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

Has anyone seen the new documentary thing?

five years pass...

Roots & Crowns is by far my favorite, so many great... sounds? and production tricks and whatnot. Nothing else of theirs has grabbed me like this one. Anything I should look for, either in their discography (or other bands)?

Wiz Califone

flopson, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:00 (nine years ago)

I really enjoyed Stitches when it appeared - very gauzy, hazy and blissed.

*out

Bells Breaks Arms is a great track.

Scratch that - Moses was the track I was thinking of.

Stitches was quite good and ...Funeral Singers had a few lovely moments, especially the opening track

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:13 (nine years ago)

easy band to take for granted. every record is solid

Wimmels, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:17 (nine years ago)

i LOVE this. and there is a second volume apparently. but i'm guessing most of their other stuff doesn't sound like this one. just a guess. i've been playing this a lot lately.

(they should actually consider putting out instrumental versions of their albums for people who aren't into indie world weary voice. because the music usually sounds cool.)

in its own way, JW goes the same places as exile in main street and twin infinitives imho. all time favorite. so much to love in all the stuff this guy touches

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:15 (nine years ago)

yeah this is one of the best new (to me) albums i've heard in awhile

was listening to it and thought... this kind of sounds like another song, like a copy of Bottles and Bones by Califone... turns out it is Califone just different song.

six years pass...

I've known OF Califone for decades now, never took the time to check them out. Last week they were playing my local pub, 200-capacity venue, not sold out, cheap tickets - so I took the chance. They were so good! Surpassed all my expectations, and hardly 100 people in the room. I really don't get it.

Rairun, Sunday, 17 November 2024 16:50 (one year ago)

I'm surprised there were as many as 100! Seriously (and perennially) underrated band
