And if he's classic, then S/D?

So, no takers?

Well, I've listened to a couple of pieces by him a while ago. My impressions were that he did have a very distinctive command of the orchestra but as so often happens I didn't chase anything else. Have you heard anything by him? If not, then how did you hear about him?

Funny that I missed this - I've been listening to Silent Songs a lot for the last few days. One Amazon reviewer compared it to some of Schubert's Lieder, so I guess I'll be checking them out soon. Any other Silvestrov suggestions would be welcome...

I've been getting into this progressively. So far I'm really liking Silent Songs and the piano stuff ('Nostalgia'). The symphonies (or at least number 5 and 6), very Mahler-esque, don't really do it for me.

Just picked up 'Bagatellen und Serenaden'. Recommended.

As also posted in the ECM thread...
New Valentin Silvestrov album "Sacred Works" on the ECM New Series is tearfully, wonderfully awesome! Kiev Chamber Choir conducted by Mykola Hobdych doing liturgical chants, spirituals, psalms... Picked it up on a whim today from our sadly struggling local classical music specialist and am so pleased I did. Oh wow.
I have Silvestrov's "Requiem For Larissa" already, but will definitely be going back to order the rest of his ECM stuff now.

Picked up 'Silent Songs' this week. Listening to it for the first time tonight and it's going down very well. Sparing, subtle solo vocal and piano works, with that same definite melancholic vibe.

Revive here to mention that there is a new Requiem for Larissa on the BR Klassik label: Münchener Rundfunkorchester and its choir conducted by Andres Mustonen. A 2011 recording now issued for Silvestrov’s birthday. Will please anyone disappointed by the murky sound quality of the premiere recording on Manfred Eichner’s label, which didn’t live up to Eichner’s normally high standards.

(Eicher, not Eichner.)
