2007 Reissues

It seems like the flow of reissues has slowed down compared to recent years. U2’s Joshua Tree is coming out, and I can’t decide if I’m still sick of it after getting rid of my copy 18 years ago. I thought there’s supposed to be some reissues of the Public Enemy albums, but haven’t seen anything. Please add to this list.

Laurie Anderson, Big Science 25th Anniversary Edition 82
Sounds great, though its impact has diminished since I was first wowed by Anderson’s gimmicky approach in ’82. It seems the bonus track “Walk the Dog” can only be played on the computer. That’s really damn annoying.

Culture, Two Sevens Clash: 30th Anniversary Edition 77
Great album, but I didn’t get this because it’s issued in a stupid DVD box.

Pylon, Gyrate + 80
Just picked this up on Sunday. I just had some MP3s ripped from vinyl before, and this is a definite improvement. Even the early single pops out of the speakers. Coincidentally, I also just watched the Inside Out documentary from 1986. Pretty charming stuff, though Vanessa Briscoe looked/sounded like someone’s slightly mentally slow aunt.

Sonic Youth, Daydream Nation: Deluxe Edition 88
Awesome reissue, sounds incredible, nice bonus cover tunes and live disc. One of my all-time favorites. Will they reissue Sister next?

Any Summers & Robert Fripp, I Advance Masked 82
I’m a bit disappointed with this – it’s repetitious, grating and boring. I hoped that Summers’ jazz odyssey freakouts would have sparked more engaging, creative friction with the Frippertronics. No such luck, but will re-listen to see if it grows.

Thin Lizzy, Vagabonds of the Western World: Deluxe Edition 73
I was excited to see this reissue, as it’s one of Thin Lizzy’s best. Unfortunately it seems to have limited availability. It’s selling for a ridiculous $68 on Amazon, Anyone know where one can get this for a reasonable price?

[b]UFO, Force It [75/b]
Sound is good, but packaging is kind of shoddy, and no bonus tracks. The album is likely one of their best, but a bit short. If you’re just a casual fan, the live album has all you need.

I only have that Daydream reissue, but it is quite good -- i recall some general bitching from ilx about it, but i love the live stuff on disc two. other reissues worth checking out: Young Marble Giants Collected Works (the complete recordings on three discs -- brilliant), all of the sly/family stone discs (even the later ones are amazing me), the betty davis albums (maybe not quite as great as i thought at first, but still great). Just got that Vashti Bunyan double disc, but haven't listened to it much yet.

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I totally forgot about Sly. I actually picked up the entire box set earlier this year at Virgin for about $50!

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Considering how the recent Sonic Youth albums sound I have trouble believing the Daydream Nation reissue is not a maximized compressed mess. Not that I actually care...

These Robust Cookies, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

bought the Bruce Haack Electric Lucifer reissue the other day!

Dominique, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

The Genesis reissues have been brilliant so far. I haven't gotten to hear the surround ones, but plan to get surround speakers for the computer to be able to hear them. Particularly "Genesis" and "Invisible Touch" (both had never been remastered before) sound a lot better. Not that it prevents the latter from being among their worst.

Plus I am a sucker for those "rockumentaries", so I will always get whatever can get me an interview about albums I love. (Same about the Depeche Mode reissues finished this year too).

Really looking forward to the five best golden era Genesis albums from 1970-74, due in early 2008.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

ghedalia tazartes 4 CD box set
chrome - half machine lip moves / alien soundtracks

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Bobby Bare Sings Lullabies, Legends & Lies is good, although two discs is waaay too much of a good thing.

deusner, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Is that Chrome an improvement from the 90s Touch & Go reissue?

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Funny you should ask. I just asked a nagging question about my Alien Soundtracks record here.

And to answer your question, I doubt it. The packaging of the record I just got is bootleg-quality. The guy at the record store explained the situation as "the family" (I assume he meant Damon's) was pestering T&G for more money, so they just gave up the rights rather than deal with it.

Mike Dixn, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

(cough)

dan selzer, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

ooh, yeah, that Fire Engines reissue is great!

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

Let's see:

Comsat Angels - _My Minds Eye_ & _The Glamour_. The former with all the singles versions and b-sides, the latter resequenced and expanded with outtakes to a 2 disc version. Stellar.

John Foxx - _Metamatic_ 2CD edition. I just got this yesterday and haven't had a chance to listen.

VA - _Fruit Of The Original Sin_ on LTM. Expanded with 8 bonus tracks, utterly captures an evening in a Paris club circa 1981.

Robyn Hitchcock - _I Wanna Go Backwards_ 5CD box covering Black Snake Diamond Role, I Often Dream Of Trains, Eye and parts of Invisible Hitchcock and You And Oblivion. Includes 20 barrel scrapings some of which are gems.

Diagram Brothers - that was early this year, right? Stunning post-punk, weird yet accessible.

Barbara Manning - _Super Scissors_ 3CD reissue of Lately I Keep Scissors and One Perfect Green Blanket.

Prefab Sprout - _Steve McQueen_. Amazing bonus disc of stripped down rerecorded versions. I was really skeptical at first but it really is a treasure.

Those are my faves...

Travis Tritt – The Very Best Of (Rhino/Warner Bros. reissue)

* -- I refuse to recommend the purchase of releases on Fallout, which seems to be a sleazy illegitmate label that screws over artists, so caveat emptor.

** - The music on these two is fairly recent, so it may not qualify as a reissue under some people's definitions. Motel Lovers may actually make my non-reissue/overall top 10 list this year, in fact.

*** - I usually think reissue lists should avoid listing verbatim reissues of albums that are generally widely available on vinyl in used record stores for a couple bucks if you look around a little bit and have been available that way forever, but these two John Anderson albums might make my Nashville Scene country reissues ballot this year regardless, so I made an exception.

Ones that would undoubtedly make the above list if you gave me a couple more days, but I just got them a few days ago and haven't quite figured out just how much I like them yet:

(Various) - Downtown 81 (Recall)
(Varius) -- Mojo Presents Cigarettes And Alcohol (Mojo promo reissue)
(Various) -- Discovered: A Collection Of Daft Punk Samples (Rapster reissue)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

(Also, Dirty Sound System's CD is not all old stuff, only mostly old stuff, so whether it qualifies as a reissue is in the eyes of the beholder as well.) (And I left out '06 and '05 stuff that I didn't hear until this year, though maybe I shouldn't have.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

Another potential contender:

(Various) - Hot Rod: Music From the Motion Picture (Legacy)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

Weren't there Sun City Girls reissues?

Juggernaut, Piasa, Jack's Creek, and Dulce are all being reissued this month and next month. Piasa is one of my faves of all of theirs and Dulce is good as well. Jack's Creek is usually hated on by most SCG geeks although I will defend side 1. Juggernaut (along with Piasa and Dulce) is credited and presented as a movie soundtrack, and sounds more like it than the other two. These were all pretty limited LP-only releases that have been out of print since 1994/5 in some cases and I for one am thrilled that the SCG's have finally done a bit of catching up.

sleeve, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Great. Will track down some, maybe all.

W4LTER, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

Boredoms - Super Roots, several volumes (all? all but vol. 6?)

These Robust Cookies, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

Miles Davis, The Complete On the Corner Sessions (Columbia/Legacy) (godhead)
Ultimate Breaks & Beats: The Ultimate Collection (Streetbeat) (two CDs of MP3s and one DVD of audio = all 25 volumes of the vinyl comp twice over = uneven but really amazing)
Griddle Greasin' Daddies and Dirty Cowboys (Jasmine) (so much fun, especially Charlie Aldrich's "Kinsey's Book")

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 24 October 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

Seefeel - Quique (Redux Edition)

phenomenal

Malcolm Money, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

(Various) - Downtown 81 (Recall)

downtown as in nyc? what's on this?

m coleman, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

Soundtrack of the Basquiat movie. Includes various no-wave legends and my own personal faves, Tuxedomoon.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

xp Yep, Downtown NYC. It's a soundtrack to a new movie (out November 6) "starring legendary artist Jean Michal=-Basquiat," the press release says.

Soundtrack has Kid Creole and the Cocounts, Tuxedomoon, Liquid Liquid, DNA, James Chance, the Lounge Lizards, Lydia Lunch, Coati Mundi (one of whose tracks is a biblical poetry jam thing that sounds nothing like the earlier "Que Pasa Me No Pop I," so maybe it's mislabeled on my advance), Pablo Calogero, Suicide, Chris Stein, the Plastics, Melle Mel (cool short rap called "81" over the beat of "Rapture" -- never heard it before -- possibly created for the movie?), Rammelzee and K-Rob -- with one or two tracks per each artist -- plus somebody named Gray with two brief pointless tracks that sound recorded just for the movie, but maybe I'm wrong. A few of the versions (of "Contort Yourself," "Mr. Softee," "Que Pasa Me No Pop I")appear to be disco remixes that sound different than the mixes I've forever been familiar with. Otherwise, not much rare stuff, but collected well.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

thanks

somebody named Gray probably = jean-michel basquiat's short-lived band

m coleman, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

I bought the Downtown 81 s/t in 2001 (saw the movie then at Film Forum, too--middle of summer, no AC, brutally uncomfortable), but this one looks like it has some extra songs that version didn't, which might be good to hear. And yeah, Gray is definitely the Basquiat group (which Vincent Gallo also played in).

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

(Various) -- Discovered: A Collection Of Daft Punk Samples (Rapster reissue)

Actually, I'm not liking this one as much as I expected to so far. Maybe not a keeper after all, but I am with-holding having a definitive opinion.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Deep Purple-Come Taste the Band-their only studio album with Tommy Bolin, and it's excellent.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I think the Kid Creole and Coati Mundi versions on Downtown 81 were recorded live, thus the difference.

Gray also features Michael Holman, best remembered as the producer/host of Grafitti Rock, and Nick Taylor, also known as DJ High Priest later of the Death Comet Crew.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

the bobb trimble reissues on secretly canadian are highly recommended

Yes yes yes. I am very glad he's finally getting wider attention.

Good lord there are too many great things being mentioned on this thread. AND I WANT THEM ALL.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

VA - _Fruit Of The Original Sin_ on LTM. Expanded with 8 bonus tracks, utterly captures an evening in a Paris club circa 1981.

I wanna hear more about this.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

uh, LINK. For The Fruit of The Original Sin.

sleeve, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

_Fruit_ is exemplary in part because you have a postpunk track followed by a spoken word piece followed by a piano piece - and it all feels just RIGHT.

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

no love for The Fire Engines, Mr. Odd?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Great responses, this is very helpful.

A question about the Joy Division double CD reissues, are they new remasters since the 1998 Heart and Soul box? It sounds fine to me, so the new ones may not be worth it, especially if they don't have all the extras the box does.

The Bongos, Drums Along The Hudson 82
I was really excited about this reissue, as I'd long been hungering for more percussive, locomotive sounding stuff along the lines of The Feelies and The Woodentops. This scratched that itch nicely.

Genesis, Abacab 81
I'm not a fan of Phil Collins, but I loved the cold, steely sound of the title track on the radio at the time, and always meant to get it. Took me 26 years, and half the album is worth it. It doesn't inspire me to dig into any more of their post-Gabriel stuff though.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

a couple great comps on Mississippi this year.
"I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore" is a comp of mostly "ethnic" 78s. Some greek stuff, calypso, and instrumental world music in addition to a few excellent/rare country & blues tunes. They also put out a comp of African stuff (R&B, highlife, pop, palm wine(? never heard of this genre before) and choral stuff from 62 to 72. Called Lipa Kodi Ya City Council.

ian, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, Mississippi also reissued the Dog Faced Hermans' Mental Blocks For All Ages LP, remastered by the band and sounding great. I love love love that album.

sleeve, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

yes, so they did! I hear they're doing Michael Hurley's "Armchair Boogie" soon, which is one of my all time favorite records.

Also gonna put a mention in for the first Hubble Bubble LP and the Raxola LP, reissued by Radio Heartbeat. Some fantastic Belgian punk monsters. Hubble Bubble features Plastic Bertrand! Not so into the 2nd HB record, or the Speedies record they reissued, though.

ian, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

ooh good news about the Hurley, I actually have an orig and maybe I should sell it now. did you see I revived the other Hurley thread about his new LP?

sleeve, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh, no, i will check that thread. i also have an orig of armchair boogie, and am perpetually looking for a copy of "hi fi snock uptown." i like the new one. it seems really QUIET, i think because of the way it was recorded/mastered. it's a shame sort of that there's not more dynamic range on it. i'm used to the fiddle SCREEEECHING in, but on this new one it's just sort of another shade of wallpaper.

ian, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Depeche Mode:

Those documentaries are always interesting to see, and I am also really impressed by the 5:1 mix of "Black Celebration" in particular.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Dan - I've been _Fond_ of The Fire Engines for years. :-)

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

but this CD looks and sounds better!

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

I must second Dan's appraisal of his Fire Engines release. It does sound better and it's really amazing looking. Plus you get the 12" version of "Big Gold Dream."

Another fave this year is the reissue of Howard Devoto's "Jerky Versions Of The Dream" with six bonus tracks and excellent liner notes.

deedeedeextrovert, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

thanks.

Been meaning to check out the Devoto.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Got YMG, Fire Engines and Woodentops - BBC on order from Deepdiscount. I want Metamatic and Fruit of Original Sin but am waiting for a better prices.

So aren't there supposed to be Beatles reissues coming out?

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 26 October 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

A few more reggae reissues. The only one I have so far is Visions of Dennis Brown, which is essential if you're a Brown fan. I'm most excited to hear Native. Blood & Fire folded, I believe, which is sad.

Dennis Brown - Visions of Dennis Brown (Joe Gibbs Europe/VP) 77
Culture & Don Carlos - Roots & Culture (VP) 82
Joe Gibbs & the Professionals - State Of Emergency (Rocky One) 76
Little John - Ghetto Youth (VP) 83
Native - Rockstone (Pressure Sounds) 77 [Produced by Lee Perry]
Bim Sherman - Tribulation (Down In Jamtown) 1974-79 (Pressure Sounds)
Toyan - Spar With Me (VP) 82
Zap Pow (VP) 73

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 26 October 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

CHROME!!! Alien Soundtracks and Half Machine Lip Moves, on LP and CD!!!

Grab them now though, see the Chrome thread for more info but they are going back out of print, like, now.

Last Resort - A Way Of Life (classic Oi album from '82)
Discharge - Why, Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing & Never Again - remastered again, not sure if there's any point really cos the last lot sound fine to me, I certainly won't be bothering with them. I think they added a couple of live tracks to Why from the Apocalypse '81 album.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 26 October 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

More Belgian punk... The Kids LP was reissued too.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Sunday, 28 October 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Various) -- Discovered: A Collection Of Daft Punk Samples (Rapster reissue)

Actually I wound up liking this just fine -- Besides the two great songs I already knew and owned (Cerrone's "Supernature" and Karen Young's "Hot Shot"), my favorite tracks are the ones by George Duke, Edwin Birdsong, and Eddie Johns. More technofied Yellow Magic Orchestra-style instrumental at the end by Jerry Goldsmith is real good too. Can't make myself care about Chaka Khan's diva-generic "Fate," though, and the Little Anthony and the Imperials disco track, "Can You Imagine," is a disappointment -- one of those half-assed "positive message" disco songs with no coherent message that techno-era dance type folks latch onto now and then, but really my complaint is I'm surprised and bummed that Anthony doesn't sing it in a high register.

Two more '07 reissues I've been liking this weekend:

Louis Prima The Essential: Jump, Jive and Wail (Capitol/EMI)
Keely Smith The Essential Capitol Collection (Capitol/EMI)

xhuxk, Monday, 29 October 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

And oh yeah, also:

Twiggy Heaven In My Eyes: Discotheque (Sepia)

Weren't Metallica reissues scheduled this year?

There are also the Joy Division Collector's Editions that were released today.

Zoot, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Picked up the Sundazed CD reissue of Moby Grape's first this weekend (CD is stereo, LP is mono). Sounds great, and the bonus tracks fit well (two tracks from their demo session, an unfinsihed song from the album sessions, plus two more studio tracks recorded later in 67).

It's been cleaned up a bit and perhaps remixed -- there's a lot of little stuff I never noticed before on the stereo LP or a downloaded copy of the old mono LP -- but two of the tracks are also noticeably longer. Omaha is about 30 seconds longer, with a definite ending rather than a fade-out, and Hey Grandma goes on for another 15 seconds or so. Had this been the case on the earlier CD issue? Is it the case on the mono LP resissue?

Also picked up Caetano Veloso's 1968/Tropicalia reissue on Lilith, that Russian company. Looks and sounds great, but still unsure how legit they are.

city worker, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

exciting, exciting metal news: witchfinder general's "soviet invasion" and "burning a sinner" are being reissued (along with some live stuff) as "buried amongst the ruins" on nuclear war now. AWESOME.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

The Fall's Fontana albums (Extricate, Shift-Work, and Code: Selfish) got reissued earlier this year. Pretty respectful remastering, not very compressed to my ears, but not all that different from the original pressings either. There weren't really any new rarities on them, unfortunately, and they made the somewhat weird choice to restore the first two to their LP versions on the first disc — I guess I think of CD versions as definitive for albums issued from 1989 or so onward. There was also that Fall box set, which I haven't heard yet.

I also didn't bother to pick up this year's Pretenders reissues (Learning to Crawl and Get Close).

Oh yeah, and Leonard Cohen's first three albums got done.

Marina's The In-Kraut Vol. 2: HIp-Shaking Grooves from Germany is fun thougha bit more samey than the first one (lots of horn-based party instrumentals). It's got an early Can song, as Innerspace.

eatandoph, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

Another vote for the Bobb Trimbles.

And Henry Flynt's Nova'billy.

ian, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Newest Mississippi comp is all gospel, called "Life Is A Problem." Totally killer stuff, only heard a few of the artists before (charles beck, utah smith) so it's mostly new territory for me, having avidly avoided any/all gospel for many years (aside from what would show up on those pre-war comps, a la revenant's "american primitive" comps.) comes with a bonus 7".

shockling enough, also feature an insert with information on the artists involved--much more information than their other comps.

ian, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

so, anything else this year? I'm doing a reissue special on the radio tomorrow.

The Trees Community - 4CD on Dark Hollow
Dinosaur L 2LP
Harmonia LPs

Andrew Hill: Compulsion
Sun Ra: Strange Strings (first time on CD, I believe)
Henry Kaiser/Sang-Won Park/Charles K. Noyes: Invite the Spirit

And of course, I have to mention the Fania reissues, although I don't know off the top of my head which of those titles came out this year.

Unless we insist on a too-narrow definition of "reissue" (and we do not), there's of course Mute Audio Documents, ie the box with every Mute single from 1978 to 1984 etc.

Do comps count? If so, the Numero Group had its typical output of great reissues, e.g., Twinight's Lunar Rotation; Grand Bahama Goombay; The Prix Label; and ABCs of Kid Soul. All great.

apparently i didn't mention it upthread already, but that Tempo's reissue on Norton is great.

some good electronic stuff this year.

there were a bunch of fennesz reissues. tim hecker's excellent radio amor was also reissued, as was vladislav delay's multila.

richie hawtin's concept 1 96:CD, previously out of print, was reissued with thomas brinkmann's remixes (96:VR.

"Culture – Two Sevens Clash: The 30th Anniversary Edition (Shanachie reissue)"

So there was a lot of bitching about this reissue dropping the ball and 1) not sounding appreciably better than the original CD and 2) missing some pretty essential deejay versions that could have easily padded out to a second disc. Is that not accurate?

thank god Multila has been reissued so I can play the CD without fear of dropping it on the floor and being out $100.

Keith Hudson's Nuh Skin Up, reissued on the Pressure Sounds label, I think, is pretty great (dark, brooding dub like Hudson's classic Pick-A-Dub).
