Giallo is an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film. It is closely related to the French fantastique genre, crime fiction, horror fiction and eroticism. The word giallo is Italian for "yellow" and stems from the genre's origin in paperback novels with yellow covers.

Poliziotteschi is a nickname for a sub-genre of crime and action film that emerged in Italy in the late 1960s and became popular in the 1970s.

where does one go after goblin and morricone?

fave composers? fave soundtracks?

i'm not keeping this solely to italian films. i've recently been looking for bikesploitation films.

Nico Fidenco's Emanuelle E Gli Ultimi Cannibali / Zombi Holocaust is one of my fave soundtracks.

jaxon, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

recently picked up The Wild Angels soundtrack which has some amazing distorto surf/biker anthems by Davie Allan and the Arrows

jaxon, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, Wild Angels is a classic.. Bird With The Crystal Plumage is a favorite of mine. Does the soundtrack to the Wicker Man count?

ian, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

yes, yes it does

jaxon, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

one of my greatest finds was an original Hell's Belles for 6$. one of the sickest soundtracks ever. sampled by ghostface on Run.

jaxon, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

and Wild in the Streets soundtrack is pretty cool too. psychsploitation. kinda silly

jaxon, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Goblin's disco-synth soundtrack for Tenebrae is just awesome; it shouldn't work at all, but somehow it does. And you can dance to it!

MacDara, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue OST is v underrated I think. If I can find my copy tomorrow, maybe a Leonardo, eh.

Piero Umiliani is AMAZING! Five Dolls for an August Moon soundtrack is a good place to start (featuring the original MANAH MANAH)

chaki, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I thought that was on Sweden: Heaven or Hell or whatevs?

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 20 December 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Okay the greatest one of these crazy-sploitation soundtracks is the one for the sequel to Mandingo (obv. not Giallo, but darn wierd), DRUM which was done by the guy who did The Wiz (Charles something or other) and which has one of the eeriest sounding main themes ever. I don't even know if this was released on vinyl (I'm 99.999999% sure it's not on CD) but it's pure unheard gold.

The Russ Meyer soundtracks for his weird in color murder/titties/pubic hair movies (Up, Super-Vixens, Cherry, Harry & Raquel, etc) have some good themes and incidental music. Not sure that qualifies either, but at least they're easier to find then Drum.

I don't even know if this was released on vinyl

not really finding anything on google but something called "Drum" is kinda hard to search for

"Charles something or other" is Charlie Smalls

I ripped myself (from the DVD) the theme song to the sleaze-crime classic "Vice Squad" recently: "Neon Slime," by Wings Hauser!

My all-time favorite Goblin track is the theme to "Profundo Rosso." That super high pitched synth line melody kills me every time.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 21 December 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

That looks great, but I was less keen on picking it up after I heard it was only 20 or so minutes.

Fanedit details: This is a FULL DVD! The download includes the DVD, a seperate Trailer in .mpg format, DVD Art and an exclusive CG bonus - "Techno Workout 5", a 30-minute non-stop megamix of underground hot techno/house songs mixed by yours truely...in the spirit of "Dancing Death".

Your intention for this fanedit: To update the film with more enjoyable, modern techno while still keeping the 80's flare. This gives the
film a whole new attitude!

Your way to achieve your intention: Constant removing sound, replacing sound, re-working sound, over-dubbing sound and remixing sound.
This was the most stressful during scenes that had dialogue. I had to work around the talking with the new music. That wasn't easy.

five years pass...

Not giallo/eurocrime but since we don't have an all purpose Italian soundtracks thread:

The Arrow box set of spaghetti westerns, Blood Money, has a lot of extras for soundtrack heads. An archival interview with Nora Orlandi (!), as well as 30 minute appreciations of Gianni Ferrio and Mario Migliardi, hardly the most high profile names in the scene.

Said extras got me enthusiastic enough again about this stuff to discover this comp, which I'd missed: https://sonormusiceditions.bandcamp.com/album/new-tape

Favourites of the moment: Bruno Nicolai's "All the Colours of the Dark" (some fabulous OTT psych freakout bits) & Piero Piccioni's "L'Assassino" (nice noir fake jazz, main theme always gets stuck in my head for days).
