Queen or Sparks

Well i threw on Kimino My House the other day and had to rush down and buy another copy from the local 2nd hand record shop and then ended up buying indiscreet as well. My copy wasn't in the best nick and after hearing it again it just confirmed how great i thought it was. Maybe it's the stale times we live in musically or maybe its just some nostalgia trip but Kimino My House/Propaganda/Indiscreet sound so good. Now there are parallels to Queen but i think Sparks were first cab off the rank and to me anyway, shit all over Queen. My prejudices more than likely lie with the fact that i only bought Queens first LP when it came out, and then the whole punk thing happened and Queen got into that whole 70's rock stadium pose. Amateur Hour indeed....Regards Harry

In my mind, the only redeeming quality about Queen is Brian May's punchy guitar sound. It sounds so compressed it could explode.

You are right about that trio of Sparks lp's, though. They're the only ones I own, and I just don't have enough time to listen to them as often as they deserve. Opinions on other Sparks records anyone?

Sparks pissed over Queen when it came to discovering disco, too.

Daniel, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, of course it Sparks. You might as well ask "The Four Tops or Northern Uproar", there's such a chasm of quality.

Despite moments of greatness and received wisdom, Queen albums weren't over-the-top ENOUGH. Too many pop fillers, mainly by May and Deacon, but Queen was only great when they were totally batshit ("March of the Black Queen", "Mustafa", "Brighton Rock", "Jesus", "The Fairy-Feller's Masterstroke", "Flash")

Plus, 'The Game' was the coolest pre-MTV pop hitfest ever. The pound signs in their eyes glowed like kryptonite for that one - homages to Cheap Trick, Chic, Gene Vincent, the Cars, the Police, and (oh yes) John McLaughlin - all within 35 minutes.

I saw Brian May in the street the other day and he still has that hair. We shouldn't enitrly dismiss Queen out of hand. They had two or three fab singles. Killer Queen, Don't Stop Me Now, oh come on we all have a fave Queen song.

"Flash" is brilliant. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the most fun it is possible to have at karaoke. If you tried to do "This Town Aint Big Enough For The Both Of Us" at karaoke you'd look a prize fool.

Tom, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sparks over Queen, yus, but I lurve Queen. That just makes me appreciate Sparks' genius all the more, though! :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, at The Reading Festival a few years back I did This Town Ain't Big Enough at the karaoke tent. The audience have the option to boo you off after 30 seconds or keep you on til the end. And in spite of my earpiercing attempts at sounding like Ron Mael, they let me stay on. Following the lyrics was somewhat problematic, but the finale was rousing to say the least! My claim to fame.

Yes, I'm in the Sparks camp, too. Although I'm wild about Queen II, they're at their most batshit there and it's really a magnificent album. Magnificent, I say!

Come on, Queen are quite good actually. Fat Bottomed Girls, Seven Seas of Rye, Killer Queen, We Are The Champions...

jonathan thrak, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will admit "Fat Bottomed Girls" is hysterical.

one year passes...
there are so many millions out there who can sing Bohemian Rhapsody all the way through who have never heard of Sparks. i think i'm going to rent a blimp and spread the gospel.

I demand that I help you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. Yellow pages under "blimp"...nothing. Thoughts?

Thea (Thea), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The melodies on "Propaganda" have a note-per-melody-velocity rate rivalled only by Yngwie Malmsteen or however the fuck you spell it.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Friday, 5 March 2004 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not like Sparks because the mustachioed brother has given me many nightmares and no boners. I like Queen because I like their music, plus no nightmares, plus a few boners, all of them due to the bicycle race poster from News of the World.

I was a lonely boy.

This was last week.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And how do you feel now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sparks, if only b/c of my mom's shocked expression watching them do "I Predict" on SNL

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This makes me sad, because when I first heard about the Darkness, I somehow got it into my head that they were a crazy 70s spazzy Sparks/Queen hybrid, and then bleh

I love both, but Sparks took the turn through disco and new wave much better and have better lyrics.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ron Mael's an incredibly fleet composer. And his Island-period stuff is seriously composed as opposed to song-writered.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Friday, 5 March 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...
