Punk/indie icons now serving as alt country sidemen

This seems like a win-win. Great people get paid, great music gets played.

Chris Isaak has Jimmy Wilsey playing for him. Steve Earle has Will Rigby. Hank III has Duane Denison.

Who else?

Is this thread not about Nels Cline being in Wilco?

And I think he's had Azita from the Scissor Girls in the band on a recent tour or two.

Will Oldham used David Grubbs from Gastr Del Sol & others on some of his records

Hm, I tend to think of Cline as a jazz guitarist but I suppose he does have a history with punk/indie as well. (And one of the things I like about Draw Breath is how he integrates math rock and post-rock elements with the out jazz elements.)

Is Sky Blue Sky alt-country? I don't know anything about alt-country but I love SBS (mostly for NC's playing and the production.) It reminds me of Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, Television, and the Eagles at times. If alt-country is like this, I should listen to more of it.

(Television less than the others, actually.)

X became the Knitters then and now.

The Continental Drifters were (?are) lead by Will Rigby's old pal, Peter Holsapple plus some folks from the 80s LA scene. Can't vouch for whether they are any good or not.

I understand Ed "fRomohio" Crawford was in Whiskeytown at one point.

If being in the Geraldine Fibbers didn't make Cline a punk/indie icon, that's certainly not his fault. That shit is some of the best and most underrated music ever.

"The Mekons are in the Mekons"

Only a couple of 'em, surely?

This seems like a win-win.

It sounds like a double-loss to me. But, hey.

Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, Television, and the Eagles? I need to listen to Sky Blue Sky again!

Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy, Television, and the Eagles? I need to listen to "Metal Box" again!

Guy Picciotto is currently touring as a guitarist in Vic Chestnut's band. Weird phenomenon - well spotted!
